Strategic Purpose Statement
The Graduate Diploma in Information Technology aims to enable graduates from other disciplines to develop their knowledge and skills within IT and develop expertise in a related grouping of specific IT subjects. The student body that the programme will appeal to includes holders of Bachelor degrees from other disciplines who wish to change careers or augment their qualification portfolio, and professionals from IT who wish to undertake professional development in emerging IT subjects.
Graduate profile
Graduates of the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology are able to:
1. Apply specialised Information Technology and Systems (IT/IS) knowledge and skills in a selected field of professional IT/IS practice.
2. Advise on, plan for and implement change processes within dynamic and complex organisational environments;
3. Critically evaluate global developments and accepted methodologies in IT/IS for incorporation in their professional practice;
4. Independently pursue new opportunities in a fast changing global environment;
5. Communicate and collaborate to build and maintain effective relationships with a diverse range of individuals, clients, teams and organisations;
6. Practise IT/IS in a legal, sustainable, ethical and culturally appropriate manner;
7. Recognise the need for information and locate, evaluate and utilise information and data effectively through professional information management practices.
8. Demonstrate problem solving, critical thinking, reflective practice, self-management, project management, and systems thinking.
Education pathways
Graduates of the GradDipIT will be able to undertake postgraduate programmes in the field of information technology as well as in related fields. Within EIT, anticipated pathways for GradDipIT graduates are the Postgraduate Diploma of Information Technology, and Masters in Information Technology.
Employment pathways
Graduates of the GradDipIT can find employment across the Information Technology sector. Examples are:
Information Systems, including Systems Analysis, IT Management roles.
Web Developer, Digital Marketer, and Search Engine Optimisation roles.
Information Technology Support and Infrastructure roles, IT Technician, and IT Customer Support.
Business analyst; business process analyst; business intelligence analyst; marketing analyst or operations analyst; reporting analyst.
Database Management Systems roles, and Data Analytics roles.

Entry Requirements
Academic requirements Successful completion of a 3-year degree or equivalent qualification. Or Applicants from industry who can demonstrate evidence of significant work and professional experience at degree level or above. These applicants will be required to participate in an interview. Applicants whose first language is not English must have an acceptable level of English language fluency prior to enrolment in the programme. This may be demonstrated in a variety of ways, including schooling in New Zealand, completion of the relevant New Zealand Certificate in English Language, approved scores on IELTS tests or completion of accepted international equivalents. Specific scores for IELTS and New Zealand Certificates in English Language are as follows: IELTS 6.0 Academic (no band score lower than 5.5) NZCEL Level 4 with an Academic endorsement For acceptable alternatives refer to the English Proficiency Outcomes Chart. There are no other requirements. Computer literacy is highly recommended in order to be able to cope with the practical and online components of the courses. Students who do not meet the criteria above, but present evidence of ability to succeed (e.g. maturity, life experience, work experience, other study) may be provisionally admitted into the programme. Entry to subsequent study is conditional on satisfactory academic progress in the first year. Alternatively, students may be advised to enrol in either: 1) the stand-alone New Zealand Certificate in Information Technology (Level 5). Upon successful completion of this programme students would be eligible for enrolment in the second half of the first year of the BCS; or: 2) the New Zealand Certificate in IT Essentials (Level 4). Upon successful completion of this programme students would be eligible for enrolment in the BCS. The Dean may apply discretion to these regulations in exceptional circumstances. Applicants who have provided evidence of having met all entry requirements will be selected in order of application.

The courses available at level 5-7 in the GradDipIT (which is unendorsed) are found in the table below. The structure of the programme is as follows:
To complete the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology students must complete 120 credits of which 75 credits must be at level 7 or 8. 15 credits will be completed at Level 6 and the remaining 30 credits can be completed at level 5 to 8.
Permission to enrol in Level 8 courses must be first gained from the programme coordinator. In making a decision, the programme coordinator will consider the student's background, specified prerequisites and their ability to meet the English proficiency outcomes for postgraduate study. Level 8 courses will be able to be sourced from those available as part of the Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology programme at EIT. Ordinarily, the maximum amount of level 8 credit allowed is 30 credits.
There is one compulsory course (ITPM6.318 Project Management) and the remainder of the courses are optional, to be chosen from the table over the page and those available as part of the Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology at EIT.
