Strategic Purpose Statement |
The MNSc aims to enable registered nurses seeking postgraduate study to prepare for a variety of advanced nursing practice and leadership roles, but not that of a Nurse Practitioner, further developing their knowledge and skills for evidence-based practice, clinical specialty practice, advanced nursing practice, research, education and leadership. Graduates of the programme will be equipped with expanded nursing knowledge, refined skills for evidence-based practice, enhanced clinical judgment and research skills, which will enable them to deliver advanced nursing practice and leadership.

Critically analyse contemporary disparities and social determinants in health and wellness, and act as leaders in bringing about significant and positive changes in their field of practice;
Apply research evidence to existing and emerging problems both independently and collaboratively, relating best practice to advanced contemporary nursing science theory, practice and education; Propose, initiate and participate in innovative and inter-professional approaches to learning and practice, devising creative solutions to problems and cultivating others' capacity for inquiry; Critically evaluate the legal, ethical, cultural and political dimensions of the nursing environment, including those specific to Maori, and relate their impact to advanced nursing practice and education; Synthesise information from a range of contemporary sources, including indigenous knowledge, to conduct, lead and positively impact scientifically based research that influences health policy and leads to improvement in health outcomes among individuals, families/whanau and diverse communities. |

Entry Requirements |
The academic entry requirement for the Master of Nursing Science is one of the following: * an NZQF-listed Bachelor's or higher degree with a minimum of the equivalent to a B average as per the EIT-specified 11-point achievement-based grading system; or * a nursing qualification deemed equivalent to the above with a minimum of the equivalent to a B average as per the EIT-specified 11-point achievement-based grading system; or * at the Dean's discretion, where an applicant's situation is compelling but not covered by the requirements listed above. All applicants must demonstrate an acceptable level of English language fluency prior to acceptance in the programme. Ways in which international students may demonstrate English language fluency include (i) completion of a programme of study in which English was the language of instruction (conditions apply*), and (ii) approved scores on IELTS tests, namely an Academic score of 6.5 with no band lower than 6 (or accepted international equivalents).

The MNSc will build on knowledge, skills and attributes which registered nurses have gained in their undergraduate degrees and subsequent professional practice. The programme is designed to meet the needs of registered nurses who are seeking postgraduate study to prepare them for a variety of advanced nursing practice, nursing education, policy, management and other leadership roles.
In order to qualify for the MNSc, a student will be required to complete either 90 credits at Level 8 plus 90 credits at Level 9, or 120 credits at Level 8 plus 60 credits at Level 9. In order to earn the 90 or 120 level 8 credits, an MNSc students may select either three or four 30-credit courses from the Schedule in Section 13. In order to earn the 60 or 90 Level 9 credits, an MNSc student may select either of the following capstone research pathways, provided s/he has achieved a B average in previous course work, as follows: MNSC9.001 Critical inquiry for nursing practice (30 credits) plus MNSC9.002 Research project (30 credits); or MN9.490 Masterate research (90 credits) (with MNSC8.002 Research paradigms for nursing practice recommended) |
