Strategic Purpose Statement
The aim of the Master of Sustainable Practice is to enable students to develop and apply advanced understandings of theories, driving forces, and worldviews, including Te Ao Maori, related to sustainable practice within the context of their discipline specific knowledge. The programme embraces principles of the Te Tiriti o Waitangi to facilitate collaboration and innovation and applies an interdisciplinary framework to address complex or wicked sustainability problems. Graduates will be able to advocate for, and lead change towards, more sustainable practices, apply high level research skills to plan and conduct independent inquiry projects related to sustainability in professional contexts, and will be independent learners who can utilise and undertake research to formulate solutions to sustainability issues. The Master of Sustainable Practice is aimed at people in professional practice contexts or new graduates looking for advanced study and research skills to become leaders of sustainable practice.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
1. Show evidence of advanced sustainability knowledge including sophisticated theoretical concepts, global perspectives and future thinking related to sustainable practice.
2. Engage in rigorous intellectual analysis and critically evaluate findings, discussions, and debates in literature, theory and practice pertaining to sustainable practice.
3. Enact cross cultural perspectives which embrace understanding and engagement with indigenous bodies of knowledge, practices and worldviews with a key focus on Te Ao Māori and bicultural Aotearoa New Zealand.
4. Articulate and apply a vision of sustainable practice which constructively takes account of multiple perspectives and reflexively recognises personal and professional values.
5. Apply sustainable practice skills and knowledge, including indigenous bodies of knowledge, to professional practice contexts in ways which innovatively and creatively engage with complex sustainability problems.
6. Utilise an interdisciplinary framework and work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams to engage with complex sustainable practice problems.
7. Advocate for and implement change towards sustainability within professional practice contexts.
8. Work independently to demonstrate a high order of skill in the planning, execution and completion of research related to sustainability within professional practice contexts.
Education pathways
Graduates of Master of Sustainable Practice qualifications may be able to enrol in doctoral studies, depending on the entry criteria of the institution concerne.d

Academic Requirements
A Bachelor's degree.
Alternative Requirements
Applicants unable to evidence that they meet Academic Entry requirements, but who can demonstrate acquired skills for tertiary study gained through study, work and/or life experience, may be approved for alternative entry.
Note: Course requirements may be reduced where you have relevant credits from previous study, or evidence of similar learning or experience in the workplace. Contact Ara for advice.
English Requirements
Applicants for whom English is not their first language may also be required to provide evidence of English language skills as listed below. Applicants who do not have evidence of English language skills and are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident should contact Ara for advice.
- IELTS 6.5 Academic (no lower than 6.0 in any subtest). For acceptable alternatives refer to the English Proficiency Outcomes Chart on the Ara website.
Note: IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test.

The Master of Sustainable Practice has a total of 180 credits. Students to introduced to foundational knowledge, social change and social change processes, a multidisciplinary focus on sustainability, policy and practice, and research as well as opportunities to engage in independent learning on relevant topics of interest.
