Strategic Purpose Statement
This qualification is intended for learners of modern Asian language.
Graduates will have the language skills required to communicate with emerging independence in familiar and some less familiar situations with emerging fluency and flexibility in most routine language contexts.
This qualification allows the local and international community members, employers and educational institutions to recognise the level at which the graduate can use the modern Asian language.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Understand and use language in routine situations, to engage in routine tasks, social encounters and exchanges of information with emerging fluency and accuracy.
- Mediate orally between non-speakers and speakers of modern Asian language in routine situations.
- Read and understand electronic and printed texts on general topics in routine situations, and locate specific, predictable information in these texts.
- Write comprehensible connected texts on general topics in routine situations, in electronic and handwritten format.
Education pathways
This qualification requires no prior knowledge of the modern Asian language but could build on the New Zealand Certificate in Modern Asian Language (Level 3) [Ref: 3870].
This qualification can lead to the New Zealand Diploma in Modern Asian Language and Culture (Level 5) (Ref: 3872).
Entry Requirements
Modern Asian language may include Japanese, Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Bahasa Indonesia and Thai.

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
