Strategic Purpose Statement
The aim of this programme is to provide a pathway for registered nurses to demonstrate competence for the Nurse Practitioner scope of practice in order to apply to NCNZ to become a Nurse Practitioner. The target market is registered nurses who are supported in their employment to become a nurse practitioner.
Graduate profile
Graduates of the Master of Nursing will be able to:
1. demonstrate mastery of their specialised area of practice, provide leadership and practice collaboratively;
2. demonstrate the Nursing Council of NZ Competencies for Nurse Practitioner scope of practice (NCNZ, 2017).
Education pathways
Graduates of the Master of Nursing may seek entry to doctorate programmes.
Employment pathways
Graduates may seek employment in advanced practice roles within their profession.

Entry Requirements
Academic Requirements
B average for courses in the Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing Practice (Registered Nurse Prescribing).

Additional Requirements
Interview is required for students who intend completing a Master of Nursing in order to become a Nurse Practitioner.
Applicants must be a New Zealand Registered Nurse with a current practising certificate.
Applicants must have employer support for their education leading towards the Nurse Practitioner scope of practice.

English Requirements
If English is not the applicant's first language, applicants will need to provide a result from a test or qualification on the acceptable alternatives English Proficiency Outcomes Chart. Applicants who do not have evidence of English language skills and are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, may contact Ara for an assessment.
* IELTS 6.5 Academic (no lower than 6.5 in any subtest).

Note:
IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test.
The English Language requirements for this programme are higher than the minimum set by NZQA, therefore; applicants who have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance may be required to provide evidence of English Language skills.

Content
The Master of Nursing (240 credits) is only available to registered nurses with a current NCNZ annual practicing certificate, who have employer support to become a Nurse Practitioner. In addition, admission to PGHL903 Nurse Practitioner Practicum requires the student to have achieved a B average in previous course work (refer to Programme Regulations). If a student does not meet a B average they may change programme and gain credits for their completed courses.

The Master of Nursing comprises 240 compulsory course credits with a minimum of 60 credits at level 9. NCNZ stipulate the education programme standards for the nurse practitioner scope of practice. A link to these education standards is provided in Appendix 2.6. For the nurse completing the Master of Nursing who intends to apply for Nurse Practitioner registration, the following courses must be included in the schedule of study:
PGHL850 Advanced Practice: Pathophysiology (30 credits)
PGHL851 Advanced Practice: Health Assessment and Diagnostic Reasoning (30 credits)
PGHL852 Advanced Practice: Pharmacotherapeutics (30 credits)
PGHL853 Registered Nurse Prescribing Practicum (30 credits)
PGHL854 Influences on Complex Health Care (30 credits)
PGHL870 Evidence for Health Practice (30 credits)
PGHL903 Nurse Practitioner Practicum (60 credits)

Credits
