Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of the Bachelor of Applied Hospitality and Tourism Management qualification is to provide the hospitality and tourism industry, and related sectors, with individuals with applied knowledge and skills who can contribute to business growth and performance, service excellence, and enterprise and destination development at both operational and strategic levels.
Graduates will be able to support the development and implementation of business solutions, innovations and service delivery models that enhance economic, social, environmental and cultural growth, capability and sustainability, and the quality of the visitor experience across a range of organisations, roles, communities and destinations within the Aotearoa New Zealand and global hospitality and tourism sectors.
Graduate profile
1. Utilise underpinning theoretical principles and technical knowledge to coordinate and manage operations and enterprise within the hospitality and tourism context.
2. Critically analyse current issues, trends and impacts relevant to the hospitality and tourism sector in Aotearoa New Zealand and international contexts.
3. Research, evaluate and recommend a range of strategic business solutions to enhance business performance, culture and customer experience.
4. Develop effective resource management and sustainable practices for a hospitality or tourism business.
5. Critically evaluate and develop communication strategies to strengthen business performance, branding and outcomes for a hospitality and tourism business.
6. Investigate and identify entrepreneurial opportunities within the hospitality and tourism sector.
7. Research and apply designing thinking skills to identify and formulate creative approaches and solutions for business enterprise and/or growth strategies.
Education pathways
The Bachelor of Applied Hospitality and Tourism Management provides an education pathway for school leavers and graduates of certificate and/or diploma qualifications.

Graduates of this qualification may undertake further study at graduate or postgraduate level in tourism, hospitality, service sector, marketing, business and entrepreneurship related disciplines.
Employment pathways
Graduates of the Bachelor of Applied Hospitality and Tourism Management programme can also pursue employment and career opportunities in a wide range of organisations and roles in the hospitality and tourism industry, and related sectors.
Graduates may become self-employed or progress to employment in advisory, team leader, supervisory or management roles in a variety of areas, including:
- hotel/accommodation management, including sales and marketing, concierge and front desk operations
- food and beverage, restaurants and catering
- tourism, hotel and event venue facilities management
- tourism ventures and operations
- event and conference planning and management
- travel agencies and tourism information centres
- reservations and ticketing
- destination management, and business and trade development
- brand and value proposition management
- owner/operator ventures
- other service sector, trade and enterprise fields.
Entry Requirements
NZQA University Entrance or equivalent;
OR
a New Zealand Certificate at Level 4 (relevant field recommended);
OR
evidence of ability to meet academic requirements (Special Admission);
AND
English language competency where English is not a first language.
