Strategic Purpose Statement
This qualification is intended for whānau who wish to increase their levels of personal health, fitness and wellbeing guided by the principles of Te Whare Tapa Whā, a mātauranga Māori model of wellbeing.
The purpose of the Poupou Pakari Tinana is to provide whānau with opportunities to engage in successful strategies for enhancing health and wellbeing integral to everyday living.

They will be able to demonstrate and explain their wellness journey through exposure to kaupapa and tikanga Māori that embraces a Māori world view of health and wellbeing.
Graduates will be able to engage in te reo Māori at a basic level using words and phrases associated with pakari tinana.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Utilise knowledge of the origin, principles and tikanga associated with pakari tinana philosophy and practice to contribute to personal mauri ora (flourishing vitality).
- Use te reo Māori me ōna tikanga associated with pakari tinana concepts and practices to support a personal wellbeing journey.
- Recognise and respond to risk factors and protective factors that impact on personal mauri ora.
- Apply the principles of rangatiratanga, whanaungatanga and kotahitanga when planning and engaging in pakari tinana activities that enhance mauri ora.
- Assess the role of iwi and community based health and wellbeing initiatives that contribute to whānau, hapū and iwi mauri ora.
- Express ūkaipōtanga through the investigation of their whānau, hapū and iwi to nurture and support personal wellness journeys.
Education pathways
Graduates of the Poupou will be suitable to enter year one of the Poutuarongo Kawa Oranga degree to advance their knowledge and application of principles and practices that contribute to the physical wellbeing of whānau, hapū and iwi. Graduates may also wish to enter year one of the Poutuarongo Mātauranga Māori or Poutuarongo Ahunga Tikanga.
