Strategic Purpose Statement
This qualification is intended for people who are interested in exploring a toiora whānau world view of social work through introduction to kaupapa and tikanga Māori health and wellbeing practices that promote positive social wellbeing outcomes for whānau, hapū, iwi and wider communities.

Graduates will be able to identify and explain key concepts of toiora whānau practice underpinned by mātauranga Māori. They will explore how kaupapa tuku iho can be applied to enhance the social wellbeing of whānau at a beginner level that support and contribute to whānau ora. Study of their marae, iwi, whakapapa links and a basic conversational level of te reo Māori will enhance their ability to assist in projects that contribute to whānau, hapū and iwi aspirations.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Analyse and apply fundamental concepts and principles associated with a toiora whānau world view, and reflect on their own personal experiences to develop an emerging personal philosophy for social work practice.
- Use te reo me ōna tikanga that embody toiora whānau concepts and practices to support whānau, hapū and iwi.
- Apply investigative and analytic skills to identify and articulate kaupapa tuku iho, foundational principles of traditional and contemporary Māori models of health and wellbeing that contribute to safe social work practice.
- Integrate the principles of whakapapa, whanaungatanga and kotahitanga with their personal experiences to strengthen and nurture self-identity and foster reflective practice
- Interact using simple te reo Māori in a variety of settings including participation in immersion environments, pōwhiri, mihimihi and other formal and informal interactions.
- Express ūkaipōtanga through the knowledge of marae, whakapapa links, te reo Māori, iwi history and through whānau, hapū and iwi relationships to ground their toiora whanau practice.
Education pathways
This heke (diploma) is the first year of the four year Poutuarongo Toiora Whānau, an undergraduate degree that focusses on kaupapa, tikanga and Māori health practices. Graduates of the heke will be prepared to continue on to year two of the degree.
