Strategic Purpose Statement
This qualification is intended for those who wish to explore and promote physical health and wellbeing that are informed by tikanga, kawa and kaupapa that contribute to Māori lifestyle advancement.
The purpose of the Heke Kawa Oranga is to provide whānau, hapū and iwi with graduates who are able to apply their skills and knowledge of kawa oranga principles and practices to promote positive outcomes in physical health and wellbeing for Māori.
Graduates will be able to support and assist the delivery of programmes that encourage regular participation in physical activity, healthy nutrition and positive lifestyle modification strategies.
Study of their marae, iwi, whakapapa links and a basic conversational level of te reo Māori will enhance their ability to assist in projects that contribute to whānau, hapū and iwi aspirations.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Integrate and apply the principles of pūkengatanga and kotahitanga in the design and promotion of exercise/wellness programmes underpinned by Māori models of health and wellbeing to promote increased participation.
- Analyse fundamental principles within the philosophy of kawa oranga to develop an emerging personal philosophy of practice.
- Use te reo me ōna tikanga that embody kawa oranga concepts and practices to support whanau, hapū and iwi well-being.
- Investigate and apply principles of recovery and nutrition associated with Rongo to enrich the everyday health and wellbeing of whānau, hapū and iwi.
- Apply rangatiratanga and manaakitanga in the development and application of risk management strategies informed by Māori models of practice when planning individual and group health and wellbeing activities and events.
- Apply knowledge of human body systems and functions associated with skeletal, cardiovascular and nervous systems to customise exercise programmes appropriate for whānau, hapū and iwi.
- Express ūkaipōtanga through the knowledge of marae, whakapapa, te reo Māori, iwi history and through relationships with kaumatua to ground their kawa oranga practice.
- Interact using simple te reo Māori in a variety of settings including participation in immersion environments, pōwhiri, mihimihi and other formal and informal interactions.
Education pathways
This heke (diploma) is the first year of the three year Poutuarongo Kawa Oranga, an undergraduate degree in health promotion, sports and exercise science at Te Wānanga o Raukawa. Graduates of the heke will be prepared to continue on to year two of the degree.
Employment pathways
