Strategic Purpose Statement |
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the structural manufacturing sector of the construction industry with graduates who have the skills and knowledge to perform structural detailing to a professional standard.
Graduates will be able to operate unsupervised to perform all aspects of structural detailing, maintain currency with technology and practice and support others in structural detailing operations. |

Graduate profile |
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- Interpret regulations and compliance information to operate within legislative frameworks as they apply to structural detailing and the construction sector. - Apply design information to produce shop drawings, manufacturing instructions and site drawings for the manufacture and installation of structural components. - Apply knowledge of computer aided design systems to produce shop drawings, site drawings and manufacturing instructions for structural component manufacture. - Review structural design information and apply spatial problem solving to optimise workflows to benefit project outcomes. - Communicate effectively with all parties to structural detailing projects using knowledge of roles and responsibilities, organisational principles, building information modelling systems and industry best practice. - Maintain currency with standards and practices in structural detailing technologies and methodologies. - Mentor others in structural detailing operations. Graduates of the Light Steel Frame strand will also be able to: - Apply knowledge of current construction standards, practice, and materials to structural detailing for light steel frame components. Graduates of the Steel Reinforcing strand will also be able to: - Apply knowledge of current construction standards, practice, and materials to structural detailing for steel reinforcing components. Graduates of the Structural Steel strand will also be able to: - Apply knowledge of current construction standards, practice, and materials to structural detailing for structural steel components. Graduates of the Precast Concrete strand will also be able to: - Apply knowledge of current construction standards, practice, and materials to structural detailing for precast concrete components. |

Education pathways |
This qualification may lead on from any Level 4 trade qualification.
This qualification may lead to the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Level 6) with strands in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Fire Engineering [Ref: 2612], the New Zealand Diploma in Architectural Technology (Level 6) [Ref: 2416] or to further higher-level study in architectural design, engineering or construction management. |

Entry Requirements |
It is recommended that people enrolling on programmes have achieved a minimum total of 48 credits at Level 2 in four subjects including at least 12 credits in mathematics from algebra, and/or trigonometry Achievement Standards), or
equivalent (e.g. International Baccalaureate or Cambridge); and - 10 literacy credits at Level 2 or above, made up of 5 credits in reading and 5 credits in writing, or equivalent credits from appropriate trades or other training and/or demonstrated skills and experience. For English as a second language speakers, IELTS language requirement of 6.0 (Overall Band Score) with no individual score less than 5.5 or equivalent. |
