The qualification includes strands that recognise advanced specific knowledge and practical skills for Marine Systems Design or Naval Architecture Design.

This qualification is for experienced boat builders who have an advanced working knowledge and skills in vessel design, construction, and vessel systems.

Graduates will have specialised knowledge and skills for Marine Systems Design or Naval Architecture Design, dependent upon which strand achieved.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Apply iterative vessel design methodology and produce technically detailed design modelling.
- Evaluate vessel performance using trade-offs of structural configuration and arrangement for multiple vessel types.
- Evaluate the impacts of vessel internal and external forces based on structural materials for static and dynamic marine environments.
- Evaluate vessel stability within safety margins for varying vessel weight loading types in static and dynamic marine environments.
- Evaluate trade-offs and interrelationships of vessel onboard systems for multiple vessel types.
- Develop and manage a marine design project from concept to completion.

Graduates of the Marine Systems Design strand will also be able to:
- Evaluate vessel system performance trade-offs and efficiencies to create a detailed specification for installation of all onboard system types.

Graduates of the Naval Architecture Design strand will also be able to:
- Produce detailed calculations for vessel internal and external forces based on structural elements for static and dynamic marine environments.
- Evaluate detailed vessel designs and calculations against regulatory requirements.
Education pathways
This qualification may build on from the:
- New Zealand Certificate in Composites (Level 4) [Ref: 3058]
- New Zealand Certificate in Boatbuilding (Level 4) with strands Alloy, Composite, Wood, Steel [Ref: 3057]
- other qualifications in a marine industry context.
