Strategic Purpose Statement |
The purpose of the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Primary) is to support the New Zealand primary school system by providing graduates who are job-ready on the first day of their teaching careers and able to teach students from Years 1 to 8 successfully with minimal induction or guidance. The programme will also ensure that graduates are able to operate programmes of learning support, which will assist graduates to support the learning aspirations of families within communities that may have lower learning outcomes - including Māori and Pasifika. The programme has a strong focus on the teaching of literacy and numeracy. The target group for this qualification includes those people who have already completed a degree, and are committed to teaching in New Zealand schools

Graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Primary) will hold attitudes that would see them:
* Exercise responsibility to cause learning * Problem-solve to ensure learning occurs for all learners * Act in the knowledge that all learners can learn * Act respectfully towards all learners * Act respectfully towards all cultures * Act respectfully towards parents * Act respectfully towards colleagues. Graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Primary) will be able to: 1. Qualify for registration as a teacher in New Zealand, and practise professionally and ethically as a teacher in the New Zealand school system 2. Establish and manage safe and supportive learning environments in which school students are affirmed as learners 3. Manage the behaviour of school students, when necessary 4. Identify school students' learning needs 5. Plan learning activities that are based on identified learning needs 6. Demonstrate knowledge of Te Mātaiaho content necessary for teaching school students from Years 1 to 8 7. Cause learning in literacy and numeracy 8. Demonstrate knowledge of how school students learn 9. Lead learning activities based on lesson plans 10. Cause learning activities in literacy and numeracy 11. Establish opportunities, when appropriate, for school students to have agency over their learning 12. Identify learning caused through learning activities 13. Incorporate tikanga Māori and te reo Māori into their professional work 14. Reflect on their professional practice and engage in appropriate professional learning 15. Operate as a supportive member of teaching teams 16. Critique education literature to identify the truth in teaching. Furthermore, graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Primary) will hold these attitudes, demonstrate these skills and demonstrate the stated knowledge in diverse settings of the New Zealand school system involving children from Years 1 to 8, and children from across New Zealand's socio-economic spectrum. |

Entry Requirements |
Applicants to the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Primary) must have qualified for the award of a Bachelor's degree at Level 7 on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework, or a recognised equivalent degree programme, and, through the advanced levels of their degree, show that they have a depth and breadth of knowledge allowing them lead learning in their chosen subject (or subjects) at all levels in New Zealand primary schools.
