Strategic Purpose Statement
The aim of the Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) is to give graduates the knowledge, skills and abilities in early childhood teacher education, with an understanding of bicultural and multicultural issues, which will enable them to gain New Zealand teacher certification, and employment as a registered teacher in New Zealand. Graduates will have reflective, leadership, communication and collaborative skills, and a capacity to apply evidence-based problem solving. They will demonstrate teaching strategies as effective early childhood education teachers, able to work, independently and as part of a team, in a range of early childhood settings, with diverse children, whānau and communities, including Māori and Pasifika.
Graduate profile
Demonstrate the key principles of The Treaty of Waitangi/Te Tiriti o Waitangi in New Zealand in early childhood settings; Employ research and scholarship in early childhood education to develop personal early childhood teaching understandings and practices; Create professional and ethical relationships with children, whānau and communities; Establish a culture of inclusion, collaboration and safety that provides equitable outcomes for all learners; Assess children's learning in a range of New Zealand early childhood contexts; Apply a range of pedagogical strategies, including effective play-based curricula, in diverse New Zealand early childhood contexts

This qualification may lead to further study at the postgraduate level in study related to early childhood education, leadership and management, as well as general education.
Entry Requirements
Have University Entrance, an equivalent overseas high school qualification, or met the conditions for special admission; Demonstrate ability to meet the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand's Code of Professional Responsibility and the Standards for the Teaching Profession (2017) criteria; All students must meet the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand language requirements; International students must also meet the NZQA Rule 18 language requirements

The early childhood curriculum document Te whāriki mātauranga mō mokopuna o Aotearoa (2017) is the basis for the teaching and learning in the program.
Te Tiriti o Waitangi / The Treaty of Waitangi
The program is underpinned by Te Tiriti o Waitangi / The Treaty of Waitangi, and te reo Māori and tikanga Māori are woven throughout the program.

Program Design
The program meets the requirements set out in the ITE Programme Approval, Monitoring and Review Requirements (Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand, 2019). The Conceptual Framework of the qualification is informed by the NZTC Values, Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand document, Our Code, Our Standards (Education Council, 2017) and Tātaiako and Tapasā the cultural competency frameworks for Māori and Pacific (Education Council, 2011; Ministry of Education, 2018)
Professional Experience
Students are required to undertake 16 hours a week (paid or voluntary) in an approved, licensed early childhood education setting. Students are also required to undertake 120 days of professional practice placement across the fifteen months of the program in other approved licenced settings. There are two placements of four weeks each, per year of study.
