Strategic Purpose Statement
The aim of the Poutuarongo Whakaakoranga is to produce graduates who will have a good working knowledge of tikanga Māori and are able to teach a range of subjects using the Māori language. In addition, those who graduate will have the knowledge and skills to introduce their students to Mātauranga Māori and to Te Ao Māori.
Graduate profile
Poutuarongo Whakaakoranga aims to: produce graduates who will have a good working knowledge of tikanga Ma¯ori and are able to teach a range of subjects using the Ma¯ori language. In addition, those who graduate will have the knowledge and skills to introduce their students to Ma¯tauranga Ma¯ori and to Te Ao Ma¯ori.

Graduates of the Poutuarongo Whakaakoranga programme will be distinguished by their confident contributions as a teaching practitioner to assist and support our next generation of raukura and pia. They will be able to teach through a ma¯tauranga Ma¯ori lens across all subject areas in the marautanga. They will be an advocate for Ma¯ori medium education able to teach in immersion, bilingual and mainstream schools. Graduates will be able to:

· actively contribute to the reclamation, revitalisation, maintenance and enhancement of te reo Ma¯ori me o¯na tikanga in the ongoing development of their teaching practice to assist in the design of effective teaching and learning programmes.

· articulate and promote Ma¯ori immersion environments to ensure our uniqueness as a people, kia Ma¯ori a¯ ta¯tou mokopuna.

· maintain tikanga Ma¯ori environments that contribute to the development and well-being of a¯konga, wha¯nau, hapu¯ and iwi to elevate Ma¯ori achievement.

· design, teach and assess marautanga Ma¯ori using an a¯konga focussed, strengths based approach to assist a¯konga in the ongoing development of their knowledge, skills and abilities.

· fulfil whakapapa obligations by collaborating with wha¯nau in Ma¯ori immersion environments.

· acknowledge, foster and promote the value of hapu¯ and iwi knowledge, and the importance of the reclamation, revitalisation and enhancement of that knowledge in the long term survival and prosperity of hapu¯ and iwi.

Employment pathways
The Poutuarongo Whakaakoranga programme is a three-year, Teacher Education Bachelor Degree in Blended Teaching and Learning (Taumata 7, Rumaki Māori) Level 7, Māori Medium. The degree focuses on the uniqueness of respective iwi, hapu¯, wha¯nau setting the foundation for learning. Upon completion of the programme, graduates will have the option of teaching in Ma¯ori medium or English medium kura/ schools.

Graduates will contribute to the ongoing revitalisation of te reo me ōna tikanga and the maintenance and prosperity of whānau, hapū and iwi and their marae. Entry Requirements
Demonstrate an intermediate to advanced level of te reo Māori and have a strong commitment to progress te reo Māori me ōna tikanga in their teaching practice.
Have a strong desire to teach in a kaupapa Māori environment
Demonstrate maturity, life experience and an ability to meet the disposition to teach, integrity and potential to meet expectations outlined in Our Code Our Standards
