Graduates from the Master of Applied Science will have advanced knowledge that will enable them to engage in independent, original research in an applied science context. Graduates will be able to apply advanced scientific knowledge in their chosen field to collaborate with a range of government, Māori through the cognisance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and private organisations to contribute to solving current problems and issues affecting Aotearoa New Zealand and other nations including the Pacific. Graduates from the Master of Applied Science with a major in Biodiversity Management will be ethical professionals who are responsible guardians of biodiversity capable of collaborating with iwi, hapū, and tangata whenua, tikanga Māori, mātauranga Māori and te taiao.

A graduate of the Master of Applied Science will be able to: 1. Critically evaluate advanced knowledge in applied science to design, conduct and disseminate independent research using recognised industry methodologies, data analysis and effective problem-solving skills 2. Communicate and collaborate in diverse working environments in applied science to develop and maintain relationships with a range of stakeholders, including government, Māori and local communities. 3. Summarise advanced and new knowledge, insight and innovation to improve practice in applied science for industry and community stakeholders. 4. Engage in analysis, criticism and problem solving to advance innovative practice in environmental sustainability in business, government, and non-governmental sectors. 5. Apply cross-cultural perspectives which embrace understanding and engagement with indigenous bodies of knowledge, practices and worldviews with a key focus on Te Ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi in applied science. In addition, a graduate of the Master of Applied Science (Biodiversity Management) will be able to: 6. Demonstrate responsible and ethical principles of guardianship of global biodiversity through the application of advanced ecological science. 7. Critically evaluate the impacts of human activity on the global environment and how environmental management in Aotearoa seeks to address these issues.

Graduates from the Master of Applied Science with an appropriate grade point average may be able to pathway into research degrees at the doctoral level.

To be eligible for admission to this programme, all applicants must meet three admission requirements: a. Requirements for either general admission, special admission, or discretionary admission b. Access to a computer and internet access 1.1 Whakaurunga Whānui | General Admission To be admitted to this programme all applicants must meet the following requirements: a. A recognised Bachelor's degree (or higher) in a relevant discipline with merit achievement deemed to be a grade average of B- or higher; or b. A professional qualification in a relevant discipline, recognised as being equivalent to merit achievement in a bachelor's degree or equivalent; or 1.2 Whakaurunga Motuhake | Special Admission Applicants must have: a. attained the age of 20 years on or before the first day of the semester in which study for the programme is to commence; and b. provided sufficient evidence of aptitude or appropriate work or other life experience that would indicate a successful outcome in the qualification. 1.3 Whakaurunga Tautui | Programme Specific Requirements There are no programme specific requirements. 1.4 Whakaurunga Reo Pākehā | English Language Admission Requirements Domestic applicants must have achieved the minimum requirement to go to a New Zealand University or equivalent. International applicants must also meet the English Language Entry Requirements as stated by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority | Mana Tohu Matauranga O Aotearoa.
