Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this micro-credential is to provide pre-trade ākonga/learners with forestry foundational skills and knowledge. It is intended to aid pre-trade ākonga/learners who have limited experience within the forestry industry to gain essential knowledge and skills for further training and future employment opportunities.

This micro-credential also provides a training opportunity for ākonga/learners in other primary industries who would like to upskill in this area. This micro-credential is part of the wider forestry training framework.

Ākonga/learners will develop knowledge and skills safely, while under supervision.
Graduate profile
On successful completion of this micro-credential, ākonga/learners will have foundational knowledge of requirements to work in the commercial forestry sector. They will also begin to develop self-awareness and self-management skills, including awareness of and respect for their work environment.
Ākonga/learners will have knowledge of:

Entry Requirements
Candidate literacy and numeracy:
* Ākonga/learners require sufficient levels of literacy and numeracy to allow them to read and understand workplace documents, complete necessary calculations and complete assessments tasks.
* Providers will support ākonga/learners during delivery to ensure they have the level of literacy and numeracy required.

Content
On successful completion of this micro-credential, akōnga/learners will be able to:
1. Describe employment principles in the forestry workplace.
2. Describe general health and safety and environmental requirements in the forestry workplace.
3. Describe principles of forestry, and cultural requirements in forestry, including the relationship Māori have with the forest.
4. Apply strategies to mitigate wellbeing risks relevant to a forestry workplace.

Akōnga/learners will achieve the following unit standards:
17769 - Demonstrate knowledge of general health, safety, and environmental requirements in forestry - Level 2, 5 credits.
22995 - Demonstrate knowledge of employment in a forestry operation, Level 2, 5 credits.
22997 - Demonstrate knowledge of principles of commercial forestry - Level 2, 5 credits.
31832 - Manage personal wellbeing when carrying out primary industry operational activities - Level 3, 5 credits.

Qualification Type

Level

The NZQF has ten levels. Level one is least complex and is often entry-level, for example foundation certificates. Levels eight to ten are the most complex, and include post-graduate study.

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
