Strategic Purpose Statement
This micro-credential has been developed to upskill horticulture ākonga/learners' awareness of freshwater values and uses and the potential risks posed by horticultural production systems on values and uses. It is aimed at growers, horticulture advisors, auditors, and horticulture ākonga/learners.
Graduate profile
On successful completion of this micro-credential ākonga/learners will be able to assess and manage risk factors of horticultural production systems that contribute to freshwater risks

Learners/ākonga will be skilled in:
- Identifying and assessing on-farm biophysical and management risk factors that contribute to freshwater risk from horticultural production systems
- Identifying and recommending practices to manage risk factors that contribute to freshwater risks from horticultural production systems.
Learners/ākonga will have an awareness of:
- Potential impacts of horticultural production on a range of freshwater values and uses.
- Potential benefits of mitigating risk to freshwater.

Graduates will be capable of working without supervision.

Entry Requirements
It is expected that providers refer to the below requirements when developing programme entry requirements
- It would be expected that ākonga/learners for this micro-credential will be involved with the horticulture industry as either a student, grower, horticulture advisor, or auditor.
- Ākonga/Learners require sufficient levels of literacy and numeracy to allow them to read and understand course material and resources, and complete assessment tasks.
- Providers will support ākonga/learners during delivery to ensure they have the level of literacy and numeracy required.
- For ākonga/learners who do not have English as their first language, the level of English language skills required is equivalent to an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 5 in General or Academic, with no band score lower than 5.

- Cultural value/uses e.g. supporting practices of manaakitanga and mahinga kai

- Examination of soil types to determine their vulnerability to erosion.
- Effect of rainfall as well as slope and soil types.
- Nutrient use
- Importance of nutrients for plant growth.
- Processes by which nutrients can be lost to freshwater
- Nutrient use risk factors for an operation
- Irrigation use
- Efficiency of various irrigation systems
- Farm drains, Washwater and greenhouse nutrient discharges
- Activities associated with greenhouse discharges that may be subject to local council rules.
- Use of decision and analytical tools (including industry codes of practice and other industry guidance) to analyse on-farm biophysical and management risk factors

Credits
