Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the international aviation industry with graduates who have sufficient operational and theoretical knowledge and the practical skills to operate small single or multi-engine aircraft as commercial pilots, independently or with another pilot.
This qualification is suitable for international students seeking to gain a commercial pilot licence in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Graduates will meet the eligibility requirements to operate as commercial pilots, under the appropriate Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand (CAANZ) rules for General Aviation. Graduates are expected to operate as commercial pilots in their country of origin.
The optional strands build on the core requirements of a commercial pilot licence. They recognise specialist knowledge and skills required for specific roles and contexts, dependant on international market requirements.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Attain the CAANZ Private Pilot and Commercial Pilot License theory subjects in flight radiotelephony (PPL), air law, meteorology, flight navigation, human factors, principles of flight, and general aircraft technical knowledge for aeroplanes or helicopters, to exercise the privileges and limitations of a commercial pilot licence.
- Prepare for, plan, and fly a small single or multi-engine aircraft (aeroplane or helicopter), operating the aircraft within its performance capabilities and limitations in accordance with the aircraft flight manual, while exercising appropriate levels of judgement and command, as defined and specified in CAA Rule Part 61 and applicable Advisory Circulars.

Graduates of the Instrument Rating strand will also be able to:
- Attain the CAANZ Instrument Rating theory subjects to operate an aircraft under an Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) environment, demonstrating the practical usage of flight instruments, radio telephony, visual landing aids, satellite navigation aids, and radio navigation aids for instrument flight as defined and specified in CAA Rule Part 61 and applicable Advisory Circulars.

Graduates of the Multi-Engine Type Rating strand will also be able to:
- Operate a multi-engine aircraft under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) flight conditions, carrying out normal flight procedures and manoeuvres during all phases of flight, and abnormal and emergency procedures, as defined and specified in CAA Rule Part 61 and applicable Advisory Circulars.

Graduates of the Multi-Crew Cooperation strand will also be able to:
- Operate an aircraft to ensure effective cockpit and flight crew dynamics.
