Strategic Purpose Statement |
The Bachelor of Environmental Studies prepares graduates to respond to the urgent and complex environmental challenges facing Aotearoa New Zealand and the wider world. The programme emphasises experiential learning and applied science, equipping ākonga with practical skills in fieldwork, environmental monitoring, research, and data analysis. Grounded in sustainability principles and evidence-informed practice, learners develop the ability to evaluate environmental issues through ecological, social, ethical, and economic perspectives. Graduates gain a working knowledge of environmental legislation and the cultural significance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in shaping environmental decision-making in Aotearoa. With a strong foundation in ecosystem processes, applied science, and interdisciplinary collaboration, graduates will be prepared to contribute meaningfully to environmental assessment, restoration, and management in both local and global contexts.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Environmental Studies will be able to: 1. Evaluate complex environmental issues to develop sustainable solutions informed by ecological, social, ethical, economic knowledge, with an understanding of the cultural significance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in Aotearoa New Zealand. 2. Apply appropriate scientific methods, tools and data analysis to design and implement independent environmental research 3. Employ a range of strategies to communicate complex environmental information clearly and effectively to diverse stakeholders to support informed decision-making. 4. Apply broad understanding of ecosystem processes, legislation, and adaptive management in terrestrial and freshwater contexts to actively contribute to environment monitoring and management programmes. 5. Collaborate effectively within interdisciplinary teams to contribute to coordinated environmental management actions.

Entry Requirements |
The academic entry requirement for the Bachelor of Environmental Studies is either: 1. University Entrance, as defined by the NZQA; or 2. Evidence regarded as sufficient by the Head of School of the capability to undertake and complete the programme of study; or 3. At the discretion of the Head of School, where the applicant is over 20 years of age and demonstrates the capability to undertake and complete the programme of study. Applicants with a first language other than English must demonstrate an acceptable level of English language fluency prior to acceptance in the programme. Ways in which English language fluency may be demonstrated include: 1. completion of a programme of study in which English was the language of instruction (subject to the conditions in EIT's Database for English Language Proficiency (DELP)), 2. approved scores on IELTS tests, namely an Academic score of 6 with no band lower than 5.5, or 3. accepted international equivalents achieved in a single test within the two years preceding enrolment.
