Strategic Purpose Statement |
The aim of the Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) is to prepare confident, compassionate, and culturally grounded kaiako who can teach in diverse early childhood settings across Aotearoa. This programme is intentionally designed for people wh0 want to become early childhood teachers, whether they are already working in ECE or entering the profession for the first time.

GPO1 - Personal and Professional Identity
Critically reflect on personal values, beliefs, and cultural identity, and their impacts on professional identity as a kaiako committed to ethical, inclusive, and bicultural early childhood education in Aotearoa New Zealand. GPO2 - Te Tiriti and Mātauranga Māori Integrate Māori knowledge, language, and pedagogies into teaching practice, to uphold obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi and support culturally sustaining pedagogy. GPO3 - Curriculum, Learning and Development Apply evidence-informed and culturally responsive approaches to planning, teaching, and assessment, aligned with Te Whāriki, to support equitable learning and development outcomes for tamariki. GPO4 - Kaupapa Māori Principles and Pedagogy Critically apply Kaupapa Māori principles and values to design and deliver respectful, strengths-based, and inclusive practices that enhance the mana and identity of all learners. GPO5 - Relationships and Communication Critically evaluate and apply the principles of whanaungatanga, manaakitanga, and ako to build and sustain reciprocal, respectful relationships with tamariki, whānau, colleagues, and communities across diverse early childhood contexts. GPO6 - Wellbeing and Protection Uphold the health, safety, and rights of tamariki through ethical, legally compliant, and culturally responsive practice aligned with national and professional standards. GPO7 - Critical Inquiry and Reflective Practice Appy critical inquiry and research-informed reflection to evaluate, adapt, and enhance pedagogy and decision-making across diverse early childhood education contexts. GPO8 - Leadership and Advocacy Apply contemporary pedagogical tools and ethical leadership strategies to advocate for tamariki, whānau, communities, and the ECE profession through future-focused and socially responsible practice. |

Education pathways |
Graduates of this qualification are eligible to apply for provisional teacher registration with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand. The programme provides a recognised Initial Teacher Education (ITE) pathway that meets the Council's requirements for beginning teachers.
Graduates may also pursue further study at postgraduate level, including Postgraduate Certificates, Diplomas, or Master's degrees in Education, Early Childhood Education, or related fields such as leadership, inclusive education, or educational research. |

Entry Requirements |
Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or residents.
Must hold University Entrance (UE) or recognised equivalent. Applicants without UE may be admitted under a provider-approved alternate entry process if they can demonstrate academic readiness and suitability. All applicants must: - Meet Teaching Council English language competency requirements. - Pass Bodhi's literacy and numeracy assessments (equivalent to UE level). - Be assessed as "Fit to be a Teacher," including successful police vetting under the Children's Act 2014. - Complete an interview, submit a statement of intent, and provide referee details. |
