Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the drinking water treatment industry with individuals who have the skills and knowledge to carry out responsibilities for the control of drinking water treatment processes, and operation of a drinking water treatment plant.
This qualification is designed for people who are working in the water services industry.
This qualification has optional strands to recognise the skills required for the operation of various treatment processes.
Graduates of this qualification will be able to work independently in drinking water operator roles in a drinking water treatment plant.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Operate drinking water treatment processes to protect people, communities and the environment.
- Operate and control drinking water treatment plant processes to meet operating and regulatory requirements.
- Apply science principles and mathematical techniques to interpret and inform drinking water treatment operations and compliance requirements.

Graduates of the Pre-treatment strand will also be able to:
- Operate and control pre-treatment processes for drinking water treatment.

Graduates of the Clarification strand will also be able to:
- Operate and control clarification process for drinking water treatment.

Graduates of the Coagulation and Flocculation strand will also be able to:
- Operate and control coagulation and flocculation processes for drinking water treatment.

Graduates of the Non-Chlorine Disinfection strand will also be able to:
- Operate and control non-chlorine disinfection processes for drinking water treatment.

Graduates of the Fluoridation strand will also be able to:
- Operate and control fluoridation processes for drinking water treatment.

Graduates of the Filtration strand will also be able to:
- Operate and control filtration processes for drinking water treatment.
Education pathways
This qualification builds on the New Zealand Certificate in Water Services (Level 3) with strands in Drinking Water, and Wastewater [Ref: 5674].
This qualification can lead on to the New Zealand Diploma in Drinking-water Treatment (Level 5) [Ref: 4139].

Credits
