Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of the Master of Educational Leadership and Management is to provide educational leaders and aspiring educational leaders from a range of educational settings with a qualification that enables them to be innovative, proactive and critically responsive leaders. The qualification aims to build the advanced knowledge, high order skills and attributes of educational leaders, including their ability to be culturally responsive leaders in order effectively serve Maori and Pasifika learners in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Graduate profile
Graduates of the Master of Educational Leadership and Management will be able to:
* Critically analyse and articulate advanced theoretical and conceptual knowledge of leadership and management practice.
* Effectively lead, manage and research in a culturally responsive manner with a critical awareness of their obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
* Competently and effectively lead and manage the resolution of complex problems in a range of educational settings.
* Critically evaluate and reflect on self-development as leaders and managers and design improvement strategies.
* Demonstrate high order skill in the planning, execution and completion of a piece of original research which extends or redefines existing knowledge of educational leadership and management.

Content
Students will
* critically examine the general range of research approaches employed in education. They will explore the appropriateness of methodologies associated with methods and apply this knowledge in the preparation of a research proposal.
* critically examine the core and contemporary leadership theories relevant to educational practice and settings. Aspects of leadership related to the management of diversity will be explored. Central to critical enquiry in this course is the concept of educational leadership.
* analyse and critique organisation theories in the context of leading and managing educational organisations. The course will focus on organisational culture, managing change, collaborative decision-making and strategic management.
* critically examine the theory and practice of human resources management, including performance management and leadership development policy analysis in educational settings. Students will also apply theories of organisational learning to the resolution of organisational and people problems.
* successfully complete either a dissertation that contributes to the knowledge base of educational leadership and management, or complete research that contributes to the knowledge base on educational leadership and management and report on this research in a thesis.
