Strategic Purpose Statement
The programme will enable students to upskill and build on existing capability in laboratory technical skills and knowledge, and enhance employability as laboratory technicians in a wide range of industries. It is targeted at people who have a strong interest in laboratory science, and who wish to work in the life sciences, chemistry, earth sciences, environmental science and associated industries.
Graduate profile
Graduates of the Graduate Diploma in Laboratory Technology will be able to:
1. Apply both broad and discipline specific knowledge and skills to a laboratory workplace.
2. Communicate and collaborate effectively in a range of vocational, educational, and cultural settings in order to establish and maintain effective and ethical workplace and client relationships.
3. Comply with the laboratory environment and documentation to meet international quality standards and legislative requirements,.
4. Think critically and systematically when undertaking routine and analytical laboratory work.
Education pathways
New Zealand Certificate in Laboratory Quality Management Level 6 (NZ2554); membership of New Zealand Organisation for Quality (NZOQ); in-service courses from IANZ (International Accreditation of New Zealand); Registered Medical Laboratory Technician (New Zealand Medical Laboratory Science Board).
Postgraduate study in life sciences, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, molecular biology, and teaching.
Reflects changes in the education sector including:
Replacement of a provider qualification with a post-TROQ national qualification.
The revised Education Pathways reflects the capacity of the GDILT to allow
Employment pathways

Entry Requirements
Academic Requirements
A Bachelor degree in science relevant to this qualification gained within the last five years or recent relevant experience.
Alternative Requirements
Applicants who are unable to evidence that they meet Academic Entry Requirements, but who can demonstrate acquired skills for tertiary study gained through study, work and/or life experience, may be approved for alternative entry. Contact Ara for advice.

A pathway into this programme is available through NZ2552 New Zealand Diploma in Applied Science Level 5.
English Requirements
Applicants for whom English is not their first language may also be required to provide evidence of English language skills as listed below. Applicants who do not have evidence of English language skills and are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, should contact Ara for advice.
* IELTS 6.0 Academic (no lower than 6.5 in speaking and listening, 6.0 in writing and reading). For acceptable alternatives refer to the English Proficiency Outcomes Chart on Ara Institute of Canterbury's website.
Note: IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test.
Students who have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance requirements are not required to provide evidence of English language skills.
