Strategic Purpose Statement
To produce capable, critical, adaptable and reflective media practitioners able to work successfully in dynamic media environments and communicate, collaborate and innovate in a variety of media and creative contexts.

The Bachelor of Broadcasting Communications is aimed at school leavers, recent school leavers, graduates of other degrees and others interested in undertaking formal career-focussed media education and training.
Graduate profile
Graduates of the Bachelor of Broadcasting Communications will be able to:
1. Apply broadcasting, media production and other media related skills across a range of media platforms to produce media content and connect with audiences.
2. Demonstrate adaptability and innovation, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively to achieve media outcomes.
3. Apply inquiry or research to problem solving in media contexts.
4. Practice ethically and professionally.
5. Integrate kaupapa Māori, Te Ao Māori and mātauranga Māori principles within their practice.
6. Critically think, reflect, and analyse the cultural, political, and economic environment and apply it to the production of media content.
Education pathways
There is a range of postgraduate studies pathways at New Zealand Universities e.g. Master of Arts in Media and Communication (University of Canterbury), a number of University MBA programmes, Postgraduate Diplomas in Business and Commerce, Graduate Diplomas in Arts, Sales and Marketing (Ara) and teaching diplomas.
Employment pathways
Graduates are able to pursue careers in the following areas: broadcasting (radio, film, television and broadcast journalism), interactive screen based industries (games, education, information, entertainment) and communication industries (public relations, advertising).To find out more about employment opportunities click on the CareersNZ logo, then the provider who offers this qualification.
Entry Requirements
New Zealand University Entrance - NCEA Level 3 (60 credits at level 3 and 20 credits at level 2 or higher) which must include:
* 14 credits at Level 3 in each of 3 subjects from the list of approved subjects.*

Literacy - 14 literacy credits at Level 3 from any subject(s)
and
Numeracy* - 10 credits at Level 1 or above (specified achievement standards, or unit standards 26623, 26626, 26627)
OR
New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Level 4) - Ara Broadcasting and Media Pathway
OR
Certificate in University Preparation (CUP).

Note: Students who have undertaken examinations other than NCEA (e.g. International Baccalaureate, Cambridge Examination), will be assessed for academic entry equivalency.

Alternative
Applicants who are unable to evidence that they meet Academic Entry Requirements, but who can demonstrate acquired skills for tertiary study gained through study, work and/or life experience, may be approved for alternative entry. This may include Recognition of Prior Learning. Contact Ara for advice.

English
If English is not the applicant's first language, applicants will need to provide a result from a test or
qualification on the acceptable alternatives English Proficiency Outcomes Chart.
Applicants who do not have evidence of English language skills and are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, may contact Ara for an assessment.
* IELTS 6.0 Academic (no lower than 5.5 in all subtests).

Note: IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two
years from the date of the test.
Students who have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance requirements are not required to
provide evidence of English Language Skills.

Year One (120 credits)
Year one provides learners with fundamental cross-craft and specialised media skills and knowledge forming an appreciation of media ecology (history and environment) particularly of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Year Two (120 credits)
Year two builds on the foundation laid in year one. Learners complete comprehensive and advanced specialised craft courses designed to prepare them for entry-level industry placements.

Year Three (120 credits)
The professional placements are delivered and assessed in partnership with Industry providers. There are a number of professional placement options, of varying lengths and therefore credit values. There is a compulsory level 7 15-credit course to be completed after professional placement. The remaining credits can be made up from elective courses.

Level

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
