Strategic Purpose Statement
The degree will produce graduates who meet the Nursing Council of New Zealand Competencies for registered nurse scope of practice (2012), and who can critically interpret and apply their knowledge to constantly changing healthcare context.

Learners will have the opportunity to explore the diverse environments and relevant cultural understandings that nurses work within from hospitals, rest homes and health clinics to private practices and community care agencies. The programme helps develop abilities with critical thinking, clinical reasoning and problem solving and applying comprehensive health assessments.

A flexible delivery approach is available for students which involves a combination of on-campus and online learning activities. Due to limited availability of clinical placements in Christchurch learners may be required to complete a clinical component outside of Christchurch.
Graduate profile
Graduates of the Bachelor of Nursing programme will be able to: meet the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) competencies for the registered nurse scope of practice; practise safe, effective and competent nursing at a beginning Registered Nurse level in a variety of health care settings and environments; recognise the place of Te Tiriti o Waitangi/the Treaty of Waitangi in health care delivery and nursing practice; practise in a culturally safe manner that reflects a broad understanding of health and wellness; recognise the impact of historical, cultural, political, social, economic and environmental influences on health and nursing practice; incorporate critical thinking, clinical reasoning and problem solving capabilities into their nursing practice; effectively apply a range of theories, frameworks and models in their daily practice with individuals, families, whanau and communities; apply a comprehensive health assessment within the individual's family, whanau and community; communicate effectively and develop effective therapeutic relationships and actions with individuals, families, whanau and communities; be collaborative and respectful with interprofessional colleagues; lead and manage within the context of registered nurse scope of practice; use evidence based practice to inform their nursing practice; act professionally by incorporating respect for and valuing diversity of life choices, and health options; and enhance their professional development through lifelong learning.
Education pathways
Master of Nursing, Master of Health Science, Master of Arts, Graduate Diplomas and Graduate Certificates from any accredited New Zealand tertiary institute.
Employment pathways

Entry Requirements
Academic entry requirements:
New Zealand University Entrance. NCEA Level 3 (60 credits at Level 3 and 20 credits at Level 2 or higher) which must include:
14 credits at Level 3 in: * English or an approved literacy subject*
* Biology or physical education or chemistry
* One other subject from the list of approved subjects*
AS WELL AS
Numeracy - 10 credits at Level 1 or above 1 made up of co-requisite Level 1 numeracy unit standard (US32406), te pāngaru unit standard US32412, or achievement standards.
OR
New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Level 4) Ara Pre Health Pathway or equivalent
OR
If you have undertaken examinations other than NCEA (e.g. International Baccalaureate, Cambridge Examination), Ara will assess your qualification for academic entry equivalency.

English language entry requirements apply as per NZQA Rule 22.

Credits
