Strategic Purpose Statement
The Bachelor of Design is an applied, industry-integrated programme targeted at school leavers, recent school leavers, graduates of other degrees and others interested in undertaking a formal career focused art and design education, seeking a formal, full-time education in a specialisation of either; art, fashion, lens-based media, motion design and visual communication. This degree will prepare graduates for a career in these industries.
To aim of the degree is to provide a stimulating, industry-integrated environment that enables a diversity of design graduates to communicate, collaborate and innovate within a range of creative and cultural contexts. The Bachelor of Design will achieve this aim through critical thinking, application of design processes and socially-responsive studio practices. Graduates will be equipped with the knowledge, skills and attributes needed to work within/communicate and innovate across a range of design contexts.
Graduate profile
Graduates of the Bachelor of Design will be able to:
1. Apply design principles across a range of media/techniques.
2. Experiment and act on ideas and techniques to solve identified problems through practice-based design inquiry.
3. Articulate creative outcomes and connect with audiences through design.
4. Integrate kaupapa Māori, Te Ao Māori and mātauranga Māori design principles within practice.
5. Critically think, reflect, and analyse to contextualise and to realise practice-based design outcomes.
6. Demonstrate adaptability and innovation, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively to achieve outcomes within a design context.
7. Practice ethically and professionally within a design context.
Education pathways
Graduates have the option of enrolling in a wide range of programmes, including: Bachelor of Media Arts (Honours) (Wintec), Master of Fine Arts (University of Canterbury), Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Arts (Massey), Postgraduate Diploma in Art and Design (AUT)

Entry Requirements
Academic Requirements
New Zealand University Entrance - NCEA Level 3 (60 credits at level 3 and 20 credits at level 2 or higher) which must include
* 14 credits at Level 3 in each of three approved* subjects and
* Literacy* - 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of 5 credits in reading, 5 credits in writing and
* Numeracy* - 10 credits at Level 1 or above (specified achievement standards, or unit standards 26623, 26626, 26627)

OR a qualification on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework at Level 4 or above in a related discipline

Alternative Requirements:
Applicants who are unable to evidence that they meet Academic entry requirements, but who can demonstrate acquired skills for tertiary study gained through study, work and/or life experience, may be approved for alternative entry. This may include Recognition of Prior Learning. Contact Ara for advice.

English Language Requirements:
IELTS 6.0 Academic (no lower than 5.5 in any subtest)

Credits
