Strategic Purpose Statement
The Bachelor of Architectural Studies programme aims to prepare graduates to take an active role in the architectural
design and architectural technology professions, making a positive contribution to local and global communities. The
programme is designed to foster creative, critical thinkers who can address contemporary challenges through innovative design, sustainable architecture, and responsible practice. Graduates will be equipped with the technical, analytical, and creative skills to work effectively in the built environment, while adhering to principles of social and cultural responsibility.
In alignment with Ara's Strategic Vision 2030, this programme ensures graduates are work-ready, prepared for postgraduate study, and equipped to continue their professional development throughout their careers.
Emphasising the importance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and kaupapa Māori, the curriculum fosters cultural competence, enabling graduates to engage with diverse communities and respect indigenous knowledge systems.
Through the integration of sustainable architecture, the programme prepares ākonga to contribute to a low-carbon future, addressing the environmental challenges facing the industry and society.
With a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration across architecture, construction, and engineering, ākonga are prepared to meet the evolving demands of the built environment, ensuring they are innovative, and industry connected. Graduates are equipped to lead and drive positive change, advocating for sustainable practices and ethical leadership within the architectural profession.
Graduate profile
On successful completion of this qualification graduates will be able to:

1. Apply architectural knowledge, principles and concepts to create and refine design solutions.
2. Communicate complex architectural concepts and technical information using both analogue and digital techniques.
3. Be locally and globally engaged and socially and ecologically responsible.
4. Be innovative, collaborative, creative and independent critical thinkers.
5. Integrate kaupapa and mātauranga Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles in practice and engage competently with diverse cultures.
6. Be industry connected and career capable
Education pathways
Graduates of the BAS may pursue further tertiary study at postgraduate level in the field of Architectural Studies or Architecture.
Employment pathways
Graduates of the BAS will be able to work in architectural practices, local councils, building companies or other associated industries as an:

-Architectural Designer
-Architectural Technician
-BCAs (Building Consent Authorities)
-BIM (Building Information Modelling) Manager/Coordinator
Entry Requirements
University Entrance as defined by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) which must include:

14 credits at NCEA Level 3 in each of three approved subjects
or
New Zealand Certificate in Study and Employment Pathways (Level 4) Open Pathway of equivalent.

Note: if you have undertaken examinations other than NCEA (eg International Baccalaureate, Cambridge Examination), Ara will assess your qualification for academic entry equivalency.

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
