Strategic Purpose Statement
The programme aims to prepare students for:

- An active role in the architectural design and architectural technology professions, and the wider community
- Postgraduate study and research
- Continuing professional and personal development
- Awareness, at both a national and an international context, of the social and cultural responsibility of the designer and technologist within the built environment
Graduate profile
On successful completion of this qualification students will have the ability within the practice of architecture to:

1. Apply design theory, critical analysis, historical concepts, creativity and research to inform professional practice.
2. Be innovative, creative and independent thinkers able to solve architectural design problems.
3. Work effectively and collaboratively in single- and multi-disciplinary teams, managing work and projects in a timely and efficient way.
4. Apply principles of building science and construction to create coherent architectural solutions.
5. Critically apply knowledge of construction processes, documentation and contract administration to architectural projects, in order to comply with relevant legislation.
6. Communicate effectively through a variety of approaches appropriate to professional practice.
7. Integrate ethical and legal requirements including issues of social and cultural responsibility and sustainability.
8. Use the New Zealand cultural context, and other world views, to inform architectural practice.
Education pathways
Graduates of the BAS may pursue further tertiary study at postgraduate level in the field of Architectural Studies or Architecture.
Employment pathways
Graduates of the BAS will be able to work in architectural practices, local councils, building companies or other associated industries as an:

-Architectural Designer
-Architectural Technician
-BCAs (Building Consent Authorities)

Entry Requirements
New Zealand University Entrance:

NCEA Level 3 (60 credits at level 3 and 20 credits at level 2 or higher) which must include
-14 credits at Level 3 in each of three approved subjects* and
-Literacy - 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of 5 credits in reading, 5 credits in writing, and
-Numeracy - 10 credits at Level 1 or above (specified achievement standards, or unit standards 26623, 26626, 26627)

Note: Students who have undertaken examinations other than NCEA (e.g. International Baccalaureate, Cambridge examination) should contact Ara for requirements.

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
