Strategic Purpose Statement |
The Bachelor of Music is an applied, industry-integrated programme targeted at school leavers,
amateur musicians wishing to increase their learning and technical skill, or professional musicians seeking a formal qualification. The diverse graduates of the programme will be musically and academically competent practitioners who are able to apply the skills, knowledge and attributes necessary for successful participation in the global music industry. In addition, these graduates will be equipped with the ability to communicate, collaborate and innovate within their industry and across a range of creative of cultural contexts |

Graduate profile |
Graduates of the Bachelor of Music will be able to:
1. Apply a range of musical skills, techniques, technologies and knowledge to perform and/or create musical outputs. 2. Effectively represent their musical practice to the global marketplace using sound business practices and principles to develop a sustainable career and be able to contribute to a strong local and global music community as collaborative, self-motivated, authentic artists and practitioners. 3. Integrate kaupapa Māori, Te Ao Māori and mātauranga Māori principles within their musical practice. 4. Articulate creative musical outcomes and connect with diverse audiences, informed by theory, practice, reflection and cultural contexts. 5. Demonstrate adaptability and innovation in their chosen musical pathway, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively to achieve practical musical outcomes. 6. Experiment and act on ideas to solve identified problems through inquiry or the research process. 7. Practice ethically and professionally. 8. Critically think, reflect, and analyse. |

Graduates may seek entry into the following:
Postgraduate Diploma in Creative Practice and Master of Creative Practice at Ara, as well as postgraduate creative programmes in a range of New Zealand and overseas universities, Education/teaching programmes of study, Adjudication training. |

Entry Requirements |
NCEA Level 3 (60 credits at level 3 and 20 credits at level 2 or higher) which must include 14 credits at Level 3 in each of three approved subjects; and Literacy (10 credits at Level 2 or above made up of 5 credits in reading and 5 credits in writing); and Numeracy (10 credits at Level 1 or above).
OR New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Level 4) Ara Performing Arts Pathway or equivalent OR If you have undertaken examinations other than NCEA (e.g. International Baccalaureate, Cambridge Examination), Ara will assess your qualification for academic entry equivalency. IELTS 6.5 Academic (no lower than 6.0 in all subtests) Additional Requirements Applicants are also required to: Attend an audition to evaluate musical skills (Music Performance Pathway). The audition will include a theory test, an aural test, a performance and an interview. Supply a portfolio of musical outputs (Music Creation/Music Production Pathways) and attend an interview/theory/aural test. |

The MusicArts degree programme will equip you with the skills and attributes required to enjoy a rewarding career as a practioner in the music industry. Learning from experienced and accomplished music industry professionals you'll develop your skills with practical and theoretical courses in a variety of topics including music performance, composition and songwriting, arranging, improvisation, music technology, marketing and music industry studies.
The programme offers students the choice of pathways in jazz or contemporary music (instrumental, percussion, electronic music or vocal), studio production, songwriting and music industry, integrating skills in performance, composition production and marketing. |
