Strategic Purpose Statement |
The aim of the degree is to enable students to gain applied knowledge and experience in business and to develop a sound understanding of the dynamic and changing environment in which managers operate both nationally and internationally. This programme will enable graduates to apply knowledge at both operational and strategic levels in a range of industries and organisations.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Applied Management will be able to:
1. Apply specialised technical knowledge and skills to business. 2. Apply a broad range of generic business skills, principles and practices, including safety in the working environment. 3. Employ creative skills and apply them in an organised approach to problem solving. 4. Use critical thinking capabilities, including analysing, evaluating and critically reflecting on information, decisions and behaviour. 5. Think strategically and be adaptable in a constantly changing global environment. 6. Apply ethical dimensions inherent in business decision making having particular regard for issues of social responsibility and sustainable practice. 7. Exercise self-management and adopt independent working practices. 8. Apply independent learning skills that encourage the regular accessing of new knowledge and information. 9. Communicate effectively in a professional manner. 10. Work effectively in diverse cultural contexts and work environments as a leader or a follower as appropriate. 11. Use digital technologies effectively. 12. Integrate knowledge of the Treaty of Waitangi/Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its relevance to applied management in Aotearoa New Zealand. 13. Apply knowledge of how to influence and lead others. |

- Academic Requirements
New Zealand University Entrance - NCEA Level 3 (60 credits at level 3 and 20 credits at level 2 or higher) which must include: *14 credits at level 3 in each of three approved* subjects, and *Literacy - 10 credits at level 2 or above, made up of 5 credits in reading, 5 credits in writing and *Numeracy - 10 credits at level 1 or above (specified achievement standards, or unit standards 26623, 26626, 26627) Note: Students who have undertaken examinations other than NCEA (e.g. International Baccalaureate, Cambridge examination) should contact Ara for requirements. - Alternative Requirements Skills for tertiary study (including literacy and numeracy) may be acquired through study, work and/or life experience. Students who can demonstrate these skills while not meeting the above requirements may be approved for alternative entry. Literacy and numeracy assessments are available. - English Requirements Applicants for whom English is not their first language may also be required to provide evidence of English language skills as listed below. Applicants who do not have evidence of English language skills and are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, may contact us for an assessment. * IELTS 6.0 Academic (no lower than 5.5 in any subtest). For acceptable alternatives refer to the English Proficiency Outcomes Chart on Ara Institute of Canterbury's website. Note: IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test. Students who have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance requirements are not required to provide evidence of English language skills. |

The programme comprises core courses in accounting, professional communication, business heritage, culture and sustainability, commercial law, economics, introduction to marketing, business computing, management, applied management, research methodology. The programme includes majors in: accounting, business information systems, business transformation and change, event management, food and beverage management, hotel management, human resource management, innovation and entrepreneurship, operations and production management, project management, sales and marketing, sport management, strategic management, tourism management, hospitality management, applied management, personal financial planning, retail management and supply chain logistics.
