Strategic Purpose Statement
The programme equips the graduate to enter practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) with a sound knowledge base of nursing theory, health studies, social sciences, biological sciences, research and professional practice skills. Theoretical and nursing practice experiences are balanced throughout the programme. Practice experiences occur in a wide range of community and health care settings and comprise fifty percent of the programme.

Graduates of the BN programme are able to integrate and uphold the articles and principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and provide culturally safe nursing in diverse contexts engage responsibly and accountably in the professional nursing context, continually developing, refining and validating their practice within ethical, moral and regulatory frameworks apply nursing expertise in leadership and advocacy to enhance and promote health, well-being and quality of life manage care of individuals/whanau/communities using contemporary theoretical and technical nursing knowledge and evidence-based and reflective practice use critical thinking and advanced problem-solving in devising solutions to complex problems in the nursing context and practise inter-professionally, co-operating, communicating and collaborating respectfully and effectively, in contributing a distinctive nursing perspective in the provision of care.

Entry Requirements
University Entrance as defined by the NZQA or one of the following discretionary entry criteria, although the achievement of any of these will not automatically secure entry: at least 75 Level 2 NCEA credits in a maximum of four subjects in one year satisfactory completion of a Level 4 Bridging/Foundation programme (e.g. NZ2860 New Zealand Certificate in Career and Study Preparation, preferably with Hauora courses) evidence of the ability to succeed in the programme, as determined by the BN Admissions Committee. All applicants are required to i. provide two confidential references from people who are able to affirm that the applicant is of good character and reputation; ii. provide evidence of a current Comprehensive First Aid Certificate;
iii. provide a copy of their criminal record (criminal conviction history) obtained from the Ministry of Justice;
Note that students are also required to complete the above-mentioned health-related requirements annually at the point of reenrolment. A Ministry of Justice criminal record is also required prior to students sitting the NCNZ State Final Examination
iv. complete a health declaration that they possess a level of health and abilities commensurate with achieving nursing practice competencies in the programme; [Note: Further health-related reports may be requested with the consent of the applicant.] Applicants from countries in which English is not the primary spoken language must demonstrate an acceptable level of English language fluency prior to acceptance in the programme. Ways in which English language fluency may be demonstrated include i. completion of a programme of study in which English was the language of instruction (conditions apply), and ii. approved scores on IELTS tests, namely an Academic score of 6.5 with no band lower than 6.5 achieved in a single test within the preceding year (or accepted international equivalents).

Practical nursing experience makes up half of the programme and take place in a wide range of community and healthcare settings. Components include Inquiry for Nursing, Applied Science for Nursing 1 and 2, Knowledge for Nursing Practtice 1-6, Whaiora, Pathophysiology for Nursing 1 and 2, Parmacology for Nursing Practice and Evidence Based Practice for Nursing.
