Strategic Purpose Statement
At successful completion of the Graduate Certificate in Historical Sexual Abuse Counselling (Level 7), graduates will be able to:
·Demonstrate a critical understanding of a range of relevant theories and therapeutic models used in the field of Historical Sexual Abuse counselling
·Demonstrate knowledge of, and critically evaluate, current research in the field of sexual abuse
·Analyse the societal factors that provide the context for sexual abuse to occur
·Demonstrate knowledge of theory and research about perpetrators of sexual abuse and their behaviour
·Demonstrate knowledge of the research literature on the disclosure process and identify personal and legal responses.
·Identify and apply strategies for assessment and intervention in sexual abuse counselling
·Understand the effects of transference and countertransference in the implementation of interventions
·Recognise abnormal responses and behaviours in clients who may need further referral and assessment for mental health problems
·Assess and plan treatment for the more common of the major categories of psychopathology as diagnosed by DSM and other modalities and recognise limits of their own skills and know ledge and be able to refer on when necessary
·Establish appropriate liaison and work with other mental health professionals and third party providers
·Demonstrate a clear understanding of systems theory with particular emphasis upon an understanding of structural concepts in families, and family life cycle theory.
·Use supervision effectively to maintain competent, safe and ethical practice
·Demonstrate insight into own personal response to sexual abuse and be able to manage this appropriately
·Demonstrate the skills of a reflective practitioner
Entry Requirements
A relevant degree or equivalent & relevant practical/professional/educational experience
2 years fulltime employment in counselling practice
Membership of an ACC approved professional association
IELTS 6.0 or proficiency in English
