The aim of the programme is to develop graduates who will be able to function effectively in shipping and port management; they will be work ready, and have developed many attributes that will ensure they continue to progress in the workplace. MIT Graduate Capabilities are a foundation of non-technical skills, knowledge and attitudes underpinning effective practice in real-world situations. These skills fall into three distinct domains: Character/Values/Attitudes, People related skills and Thinking skills. Apart from understanding technical issues they will be expected to work productively in trade teams and communicate effectively not only within the team but also externally with their customers and their principles. In this regard they will display a capability to use all forms of communication correctly and appropriately and to utilise the technological resources available.
Graduates will have the capability to assess customer's needs and be able to identify, analyse and solve the problems that these may present; evaluating potential solutions and assessing their consequences. These capabilities will be developed within the programme by the use of simulated case studies that require the use of industry software and involve group work.
Graduates will also understand the need to be constantly informed about trends and recent developments occurring in their industry and will be capable of accessing and analysing information from a variety of sources in order to keep up to date.
The dynamic nature of the industry means they will need to be able to assess the impact of developments occurring in their industry and adapt and respond to changes that occur. Practice in developing these capabilities is through the preparation of assignments that have a topical nature.
It is essential that graduates have the capability to think critically; to analyse and evaluate issues that will occur in their work practice. Such a capability is developed by the study of law that will affect them in their business.
Shipping is an international industry and graduates will be involved with people from diverse backgrounds. They should be able to demonstrate an ability to interact effectively in a cross cultural environment and should have the confidence to question practices that are inappropriate to the work place; Graduates will be exposed to issues of this nature not only in the classroom environment but also during a field trip programme.
The field trip programme also provides the opportunity for graduates to develop a bicultural awareness. The correct pronunciation of Maori place names, greetings, words in common use and an understanding of how early traders, local geography and commerce has affected the development of New Zealand and their peoples.
Graduates will also be expected to understand and apply the ethical standards of behaviour appropriate to the industry and this is developed by attendance at industry meetings and conferences and the introduction of guest lecturers that form an integral part of the programme.
Throughout the programme students will be exposed to a large variety of teaching and learning methods. As part of the skills of a self directed learner they will learn to identify student barriers to learning and identify those methods that are beneficial. They will be able to apply appropriate strategies for their ongoing learning.

Graduates of this programme will be able to:

Demonstrate a full understanding of technical issues and operational procedures in supply chain management.

Establish systems, research and develop solutions to problems and evaluate strategies for optimising efficiency within their operation.

Work productively in supply chain teams.

Communicate effectively within the work team and externally with customers, service providers and principles, chair meetings and head working groups.

Utilise the technological resources available including typical industry software applications to fulfil operational functions.

Assess the needs of the organisation or of customers and be able to identify, analyse and solve the problems that these may present through evaluating potential solutions and assessing their consequences.

Access and analyse information from a variety of sources in order to keep up to date with industry trends.

Adapt and respond to changes that occur in industry practice.

Think critically; to analyse and evaluate issues that will occur in their work practice.

Applicants must meet the following entry requirements:

Successful completion of an appropriate NQF level 6 or 7 programme, e.g. a business related degree

or

Successful completion of the MIT Diploma in Supply Chain Management; plus relevant work experience

or

Successful completion of MIT Diploma in Shipping and Freight; plus relevant work experience

or

Evidence of at least 3 years relevant work experience at a senior operational level or equivalent (prospective students may be asked to complete a research essay to show academic ability).

Have English language competence to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English. Any applicants whose first language is not English may be required to provide evidence of an overall IELTS (Academic) band score of 6.0 (with no score below 5.5) or equivalent.

Students must be able to show a positive attitude to learning and achievement, a high standard of personal discipline and effective communication skills. These will be normally assessed by way of an interview. Alternative means to assess these criteria will be adopted where an interview is not practicable, as in the case of international students.

Following the interview, the panel will decide whether the prospective student should be accepted or declined entry to the programme. Suitable letters will then be forwarded to the student. Applications from those accepted into the course will be retained.
