Strategic Purpose Statement |
A graduate of this programme should be able to carry out the functions of a jeweller with two years experience in the jewellery manufacturing trade whilst working under supervision. The processes carried out in both cognitive and psychomotor domains are planning, marking-out, cutting, forming and assembly. These activities should be carried out in an efficient and economic manner. At the completion of this programme graduates will be able to undertake the following: confident and competent use of the core skills of jewellery manufacture eg. metal working, hot and cold joining techniques, chain making, hinge and catch making, basic setting and enamelling as well as more advanced skills including the embellishment of jewellery surfaces, the casting of metal objects employing a range of methods; produce a range of jewellery pieces under supervision; make standard repairs to a range of jewellery items eg. claw replacement, bezel replacement, brooch-pin replacement, shank replacement and chain repair; confident and competent use of CAD technology for the manufacture of jewellery items; design and produce unique jewellery items; apply for a junior level position in the jewellery industry; embark on higher level study in jewellery manufacture and design; maintain safe health and safety practices in the workshop; carry out reflective practice on the quality of their work; sketch and represent pieces of jewellery for the purposes of manufacture; develop appropriate levels of literacy and numeracy to function in a workshop and engage with industry.
