Strategic Purpose Statement
Graduates of the programme have the theoretical knowledge and basic skills to assist Pacific Island fishing communities and fishing enterprises to develop sustainable and profitable fishing operations.
Entry Requirements
Entry to the programme is open to fisheries officers and extension agents selected by MFAT from participants nominated by participating governments of Pacific Island Countries and Territories.

The programme is open to private fishers provided their nomination is endorsed by their government.

Although participating governments are free to nominate any members of their staff for the programme, the following recommendations are made to guide selection:

- Participants should have at least one year of fisheries experience, and preferably two

- Participants should be between twenty and thirty five years of age

- Be physically capable of completing tasks associated with the course

- Applications from female candidates are encouraged

English Language Requirements:

All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at this level. Those students, whose first language is not English, are required to demonstrate:

An International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall academic score of at least 6.0 issued within the last two years, with not less than 5.5 in any category OR equivalent.

Where the Programme Co-ordinator considers that a student's English language skills require improvement in order to successfully complete the programme, a recommendation will be made to MFAT for the student to enrol in a suitable English Language course at NMIT. The English language course would be either a 4-week Summer School held prior to the start of the programme or NMIT Online English undertaken concurrently with the Pacific Island Fisheries Officer Programme.

Typically the number of students accepted for the programme will be not more than sixteen. Where the number of applicants exceeds this, a limitation on numbers may be needed to maintain the required standard of individual tuition for students.

Qualification Type

Level

The NZQF has ten levels. Level one is least complex and is often entry-level, for example foundation certificates. Levels eight to ten are the most complex, and include post-graduate study.

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
