Strategic Purpose Statement
Bachelor of Arts and Media (Visual Arts and Design)/(Creative Writing) aims to
- Create an excellent teaching and learning environment based on open and intelligent enquiry underpinned by research;
- Develop students' independence, technical skills, and theoretical knowledge to prepare them for successful careers in their specialist arts or media field;
- Develop and consolidate students' understanding of the principles, elements, and effective use of the relevant visual or written language;
- Enable students to gain the necessary industry knowledge and technological expertise to begin creative careers in the rapidly changing contemporary world;
- Foster understanding of the theoretical, historical, and cultural contexts of contemporary arts and media practice and enable students to apply this understanding to their own practice;
- Prepare students for postgraduate study;
- Produce skilled artists, designers, and writers, who are literate across a range of technologies, and have the ability to take cross-disciplinary approaches, who will go on to make a positive contribution to regional and national arts and creative industries;
- Provide a degree programme that is relevant and responsive to the needs of the regional arts environment and economy and will prepare graduates for successful practice both within the region and beyond.
Graduate profile
Visual Arts and Design Major: Graduates of this qualification will be able to: * Produce visual arts/design/media work of a high standard based on informed conceptual development and technical skill * Participate effectively in research, successfully relating researched knowledge to practice. * Independently undertake and successfully manage arts and media projects * Work safely and efficiently using media, technologies and technical skills appropriate to their specialties. * Use design processes and specialized visual language to generate successful and innovative solutions using a range of different media, technologies, and approaches. * Communicate ideas effectively in oral and written form using language and standards appropriate to a variety of presentations. * Have a comprehensive understanding of the variety of technologies and presentation possibilities available for visual arts, design and media projects. * Have a comprehensive range of transferable arts and media skills to enable them to contribute to a variety of evolving arts and media occupations. * Have a comprehensive knowledge of the theoretical, social and practical issues within the cultural and historical contexts of contemporary visual arts and design practice. * Understand the historical and cultural contexts of visual arts and design in Aotearoa New Zealand and be able to recognise and use the principles of cultural safety. * Achieve high academic standards in studio work, written and oral presentations, and be effective critical thinkers. * Have the capacity and skills to develop networks that will enable ongoing professional development. * Have the ability to apply intermedia and cross disciplinary approaches to their practice. * Be able to work independently or as an effective team member, to contribute to the visual arts and media culture of New Zealand. * Have the capability to access relevant local, regional, national and international professional networks. * Have the potential to become leading visual arts or design practitioners in their region. Creative Writing Major: Graduates of this qualification will be able to: * Produce creative writing work of a high standard based on informed conceptual development and a high standard of writing skills * Be effective researchers, successfully relating researched knowledge to practice. * Independently undertake and successfully manage creative writing projects * Work safely and efficiently using media technologies and technical skills appropriate to their specialties. * Use specialized techniques to generate successful and innovative writing using a range of different genres, media, technologies and approaches * Communicate ideas effectively in oral and written form using language and standards appropriate to a variety of presentations. * Have a comprehensive understanding of the variety of publication, presentation and performance possibilities available for creative writing projects * Have a comprehensive range of transferable creative writing and literary skills to enable them to contribute to a variety of creative writing and other occupations. * Have a comprehensive knowledge of the theoretical, social and practical issues within the cultural and historical contexts of contemporary creative writing practice * Understand the historical and cultural contexts of creative writing in Aotearoa New Zealand and be able to recognise and use the principles of cultural safety. * Achieve high academic standards in studio work, written and oral presentations, and be effective critical thinkers * Have the ability, skills and networks to enable ongoing professional development. * Have the ability to apply interdisciplinary and cross disciplinary approaches to creative writing practice * Be able to work independently or as an effective team member, to contribute to the creative writing culture of New Zealand. * Have the capacity to access relevant local, regional, national and international professional networks * Have the potential to become leading creative writing practitioners in their region.

Entry Requirements
Academic Entry Requirements: University Entrance: NCEA Level 3 (60 credits at Level 3 and 20 credits at Level 2 or higher) which must include: * 14 credits at Level 3 in each of three approved* subjects including at least one from the following subjects list: Painting (Visual Art); Design (Visual Art); Photography (Visual Art); Sculpture (Visual Art); Printmaking (Visual Art); Graphics (Technology);Design (Technology); Textiles (Technology); Media Studies; Drama; Materials Technology; Digital Technology; English; History; Social Sciences or Art History as well as * Literacy* - 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of 5 credits in reading, 5 credits in writing and * Numeracy* - 10 credits at Level 1 or above (specified achievement standards, or unit standards 26623, 26626, 26627) OR A qualification on the NZQF at Level 4 or above in a related discipline OR A qualification or examination recognised as being equivalent to achievement of NCEA Level 3 (e.g. International Baccalaureate, Cambridge Examination) * NZQA approved subjects: see here standards/awards/university-entrance/A English Language Requirements: If English is not the applicant's first language, applicants will need to provide a result from a test or qualification on the acceptable alternatives English Proficiency Outcomes Table: ? IELTS 6.0 Academic (no lower than 5.5 in each band), Note: Applicants who do not have evidence of English language skills and are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, may contact NMIT for an assessment Applicants who have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance requirements are not required to provide evidence of English language skills IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test.
