Strategic Purpose Statement |
Successful graduates of the Northland Polytechnic Certificate in Professional Hunting and Pest Management programme will be able to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to secure a position as a professional hunter and/or pest controller, and will be able to: Identify the hazards and work safely in the professional hunting and/or pest control workplace environment; Operate ATV vehicles in a safe and appropriate manner in an off road environment; Communicate effectively in the professional hunting and/or pest control workplace environment; Demonstrate survival skills, interpret weather information, navigate and travel safely and appropriately in the professional hunting and/or pest control workplace environment; Cull possums using traps and toxins and recover skins and fur; Carry out the duties normally expected from individuals working within the professional hunting and/or pest management industries in a competent and effective manner, giving full regard to the professional, legal and ethical standards required; Work effectively and sensitively within the conservation estate; Accept responsibility for personal professional development and learning needs.

Entry Requirements |
Students must be 16 years of age or older at the time of enrolment, unless approved otherwise by the Programme Manager. The minimum IELTS requirement for entry into this programme is a score of 5.5. Applicants must hold either a current firearms license or be able to submit two references from high standing members of society (Justice of the Peace, Kaumatua etc) attesting to their character and suitability to hold a firearms licence and Handlers Certificate for cyanide.
