Strategic Purpose Statement
The Bachelor of Applied Arts programme aims: - to prepare a students for a variety of vocational settings or entry into post-graduate studies through use of theory, research skills, practical skills, industrial experience and project work; - to develop creative, lateral-thinking problem-solvers in the Arts workplace. The degree programme thus aims to provide the opportunity for students in the arts to pursue higher level work in the theory, research and practice which will yield the specialised knowledge required to seek selected positions in the careers requiring that knowledge. Most of the fields in the applied arts areas are seeking better qualified entry level personnel. It is envisioned that these students will be qualified to enter Master's programmes at universities or other polytechnics, either upon graduation or later in their career.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to: Apply specialised skills and theoretical knowledge in the production of work in a selected area of applied arts, craft and/or design; Use investigative tools with creative processes, methods and technologies to synthesise ideas and solve problems in a selected area of applied arts, craft and/or design; Critically analyse research findings to support the development of ideas and to position own work within conventions and contexts in applied arts, craft, and/or design; Demonstrate leadership and professional practice to manage projects/briefs and prepare for selected career pathways in applied arts, craft and/or design; Critically evaluate work, communicate to a range of audiences, and present own resolved work in a real-world context; Engage in higher levels of critical thinking and appraisal; and Demonstrate the ability to conceptualise which is original but founded on a solid research base.

Entry Requirements
All applicants must:
* Be at least 16 years of age or over (unless an exemption has been granted) at the commencement of the programme; and
* Have attained one of the following:
o NCEA Level 3 with University Entrance; or
o Successfully completed the New Zealand Certificate in Arts and Design, or an equivalent art/design qualification (60 credits at Level 4); or
o Has proof of relevant experience equivalent to a Level 4 Art/ Design qualification; and
* Submit a portfolio that shows skills in drawing and Art/ Design. The portfolio should demonstrate artistic ability in relevant art/ design practice. Including but not limited to: Photography/ Graphic Design/ Digital Media Arts and Design/ Sculpture/ Whakairo/ Raranga/Painting/ Printmaking/ Drawing
Applicants for whom English is not their first language must achieve an IELTS academic score of 6.0, with no band less than 5.5, or equivalent from a recognised alternative English proficiency test.

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
