Strategic Purpose Statement
To provide undergraduate nursing education that produces graduates with a Bachelor of Nursing, which meets:

* the Institutes of Technology Polytechnics (ITP) Quality academic standards for a degree, and
* the Nursing Council of New Zealand Competencies for the Registered Nurse scope of practice.

This includes a pathway for registered nurses to gain a Bachelor of Nursing and for nurses with overseas registration to meet Nursing Council of New Zealand competencies for registered nurses.

* Perform with nursing knowledge and skill which contributes to the delivery of health care and client outcomes thus making a difference in people's lives.

Specific skills

* Professionally synthesize theoretical and practical nursing knowledge.
* Initiate and enter into therapeutic relationships enhanced by the guidelines for Cultural Safety, the Treaty of Waitangi and Maori health (2011).
* Contribute to the health of individuals and communities by the application of informed nursing practice.
* Utilise legislative requirements/technical standards and common industry practices.
* Understand and effectively utilise technology in the healthcare setting.

Sustainable Practice

* Have technical knowledge of the skills to analyse, evaluate and participate in research in sustainability.
* Critically analyse and evaluate complex relationships in nature to evaluate the cultural, social, economic and environmental impact or their actions across time and systems.
* Thoroughly consider ethical, legal, social and cultural values and beliefs in the creation of appropriate responses to abstract problems in the sustainability of our social, economic and natural environments.
* Plan, resource and manage a democratic process to make changes to more sustainable practices.
* Have the ability to research and analyse practices and evaluate how they fit into the natural laws governing ecosystem function.

Internationalisation

* Have the ability to adapt to an unfamiliar culture and operate in a socially and culturally diverse environment, appreciate differences in gender, culture and customs and be able to work effectively and safely.
Education pathways
Graduates are eligible to enter postgraduate programmes at any tertiary institution offering postgraduate nursing qualifications. Otago Polytechnic has an agreement with EIT offering postgraduate certificate, postgraduate diploma and master qualifications in Nursing and Otago Polytechnic staff provide students with supervision and support in their studies.
Employment pathways
Graduates from the pre-registration programme will gain a Bachelor of Nursing and be eligible to apply to Nursing Council of New Zealand for registration as a nurse. This enable the registered nurse to work in a diverse range of New Zealand health care settings. The range of employment opportunities include aged care, mental health, primary health and within a hospital environment.

Entry Requirements
Minimum academic entry criteria are:

42 NCEA credits at level 3 or higher across four subjects, including a minimum of 14 credits at Level 3 biology and/or 14 credits in Level 3 chemistry, and English or an English-rich subject from an approved list.

Literacy -10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of:

* 5 credits in reading
* 5 credits in writing
Numeracy -10 credits at Level 1 or above, made up of:
* achievement standards -specified achievement standards available through a range of subjects, or
* unit standards- package of three numeracy unit standards (26623, 26626, 26627-all three required)

Applicants over 20 years of age must have completed the equivalent to NCEA Level 3 biology and/or chemistry within the last five years. This may be achieved through successful completion of a pre-entry programme such as the Certificate in Health at Otago Polytechnic; however completion of these pre-entry qualifications does not guarantee automatic entry into this programme.

All applicants who are accepted must obtain a First Aid Certificate, make a health declaration and declare any criminal convictions.

International Applicants

Must meet all stated entry requirements and demonstrate English language skills equivalent to an IELTS overall band score (academic) of 6.5 (with no individual score less than 6.5). The Nursing Council of New Zealand regularly reviews their requirements; the Otago Polytechnic Career Pathway document will reflect any changes that are made in subsequent years.
International students pay full international fees and must complete both the Otago Polytechnic international student application process and the School of Nursing application process.
