Strategic Purpose Statement
The aim of the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Honours) is to prepare graduates of the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy or equivalent to undertake research as part of their occupational therapy practice in bicultural Aotearoa New Zealand, and to pursue advanced study. The qualification will increase their knowledge in a specific area of practice and may therefore increase the range of roles into which a graduate may be employed.
Graduate profile
By the end of this programme, graduates will be able to:
- Critically analyse new knowledge and ideas from a sound and rigorous theoretical basis, demonstrating intellectual independence and analytical rigour, to support further development of the occupational therapy role in traditional, emergent and/or innovative areas.
- Plan and conduct research, analyse results, and present findings to contribute to the ongoing development of occupational therapy theory and practice in bicultural Aotearoa New Zealand, to the satisfaction of subject experts.
- Critically review and further refine their knowledge understandings of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, their responsibilities to connect with and work collaboratively with Māori, and the application of this to their practice and research as occupational therapists.

Entry Requirements
Minimum academic entry criteria are:
Ākonga are admitted to this programme after completion of the third year of an undergraduate Bachelor of Occupational Therapy degree. They are required to commence study in the Honours programme within three years of completing their degree. To be admitted to the programme ākonga must have passed all courses in the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy programme (on their first attempt). In years two and three ākonga must have achieved a minimum B grade average or equivalent. Only graded components contribute to this calculation. For courses which do not award grades ākonga must pass each course on their first attempt. Special circumstances can be considered on application by ākonga to the Head of School.

International applicants for whom English is not a first language are required to have an IELTS overall band score (Academic) of 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.5 in each band. These IELTS scores align with what is required in to apply for registration as an occupational therapist in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Applicants who do not meet all of the academic requirements for entry into the programme can make an application to the Head of School. Entry to the programme will be at the Head of School's discretion.

Ākonga who meet the entry criteria will be accepted on a first come, first served basis, until all places are full. After the programme is full, applicants who meet the entry criteria will then be placed on a waiting list and informed if a place becomes available.

The Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Honours) (Hons) is a discrete postgraduate 120 credit level 8 programme consisting of three compulsory courses - BH435001 Research for Practice, BH436001 Research Design, and BH500005 Honours Dissertation. In most instances, ākonga enrol in full- time study. Ākonga progress through the programme by completing courses in sequence. They complete BH435001 Research for Practice, and BH436001 Research Design in the first semester, and BH500005 Honours Dissertation, in Semester 2. Ākonga can enrol part-time but must complete BH435001 Research Design before enrolling in the Honours Dissertation. The Honours Dissertation is completed in two parts (BH500006 & BH500007) for part-time ākonga.
