Strategic Purpose Statement
The Master of Visual Arts programme aims to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of the professional, conceptual and technical skills relevant to their chosen field in the production of an independently developed and original exhibition and written text.
Graduate profile
Students from this programme will graduate with a postgraduate qualification aligned to international initiatives concerning benchmarking and which have parity with similar programmes in the national and international arena. They will
· have demonstrated mastery in the production of a body of studio work exhibited publicly and benchmarked nationally and internationally
· have demonstrated mastery in the production of an extended essay which connects their studio work with conceptual ideas and with the work of their community of profession as based on their participatory engagement with a series of seminars on contemporary practice theory
· have demonstrated mastery in the delivery of an oral seminar on their own studio work in relation to contemporary visual arts practices
· have demonstrated mastery in the articulation of the integration of their own making and writing in the public presentation of this material
· have a sense of achievement and confidence as practitioners
· have highly developed skills in their chosen field that distinguish them as pragmatic, resourceful, adaptable and flexible
· have an applied understanding of the historical and contemporary conventions of their field
· have identified their own (continuing) learning needs and possess the research skills and motivation necessary to locate and acquire new skills, knowledge and understanding
have demonstrated through explicit articulation within the programme an awareness of biculturalism and its relevance to both the wider field of the visual arts and its relevance to their own studio project
· have demonstrated through an explicit articulation within the programme an awareness of initiatives that ensure sustainability in their chosen field through the informed use of resources and through an understanding of the ways in which the practice of art contributes to the sustainability of cultures and the socio-economic framework of the wider world
· have articulated within the programme an understanding of their own skills and field of practice and their relationship to the wider world, with a sensitivity to both specialist and general audiences
· have demonstrated within the programme the ability to be able to critically and with intellectual rigour appraise art practices
· have demonstrated a mastery of professional practices that enable them to be productive in the development of their own careers and to initiate, develop and complete projects
· be visionary, capable of taking risks, lateral thinkers, effective problem solvers and adaptable to a range of professional challenges
· be effective team workers demonstrating trust and good communication and networking skills towards the completion of a body of studio work.

Graduates may pathway into the Otago Polytechnic Master of Fine Arts.
Employment pathways

Entry Requirements
Minimum entry requirements are:
1. A postgraduate visual arts qualification with a minimum of 60 credits at level 8 and with an overall grade of B (70%) or higher.
2. Exceptional applicants not meeting the entry requirements but with appropriate documented professional experience may be referred to the Centre for Assessment of Prior Learning (CAPABLE).
3. International students must demonstrate that they have equivalent experience / qualifications as home students and for those whose first language is not English, must show evidence of English Language competence at IELTS overall band score of 6.5 with no individual band less than 6.0 or equivalent.
