Strategic Purpose Statement
Our aim is for graduates of the Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) program who are well educated and well informed about educational values, theories and practices, morally responsible for their own decisions and for the nature of the education that they provide and responsible for acting wisely. They will demonstrate intellectual independence, critical thinking and analytic rigour; engage in self-directed learning; demonstrate knowledge and skills related to the ideas, principles, concepts, chief research methods and problem-solving techniques of a recognised major subject; demonstrate skills needed to acquire, understand and assess information from a range of sources; and, demonstrate communication and collaborative skills
Graduate profile
Graduates will have extensive knowledge of early childhood educational and pedagogical theory to better inform subject study knowledge to broaden their perspectives and provide specialist content in the area of early childhood education. Graduates of the Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) are eligible to apply for teacher registration and provisional certification in New Zealand and pathway to the NZTC Postgraduate and Masters' qualifications.

Employment pathways

Entry Requirements
Applicants must meet University Entrance requirements or equivalent. The College selection panel assesses the ability of all applicants for the Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) Level 7 to meet the good character, 'Graduating Teacher Standards' and 'Fit to be a Teacher' guidelines of the Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand. An offer of a place is made subject to a satisfactory police check. Applicants for whom English is a second language and Te Reo Maori is not their first language must provide evidence of an Academic IELTS score issued within the last two years of at least 7.0 in each component of the test. IELTS scores may be combined from two or more tests as long as on one test a minimum of 6.0 overall and 5.5 in each component is achieved.

The Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) qualification encompasses professional studies, curriculum and teaching studies, development and learning studies, and family and community studies. The program content blends theory and research to ensure graduates are equipped with the skills and knowledge required for the early childhood profession. The qualification has a strong field practice component to ensure student teachers are reflecting on their experiences in the sector as they complete their program of study

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
