Strategic Purpose Statement
This qualification is intended for those who wish to contribute to Māori organisations and other organisations as managers using effective leadership skills and knowledge informed by kaupapa Māori and te reo Māori in order to contribute to the long-term survival of whānau, hapū and iwi.

The purpose of the Tāhuhu Whakahaere is to provide whānau, hapū, iwi and other organisations with graduates who are are capable of working collaboratively to manage and administer hapū and iwi affairs.
Graduates will be able to work in both Māori organisations and other organisations in executive and senior level management roles informed by kaupapa Māori. Graduates will be able to effectively plan, organise, lead and control within an organisation.
Graduate profile
The graduate of the Tāhuhu Whakahaere will:
* be a skilled researcher, an agile and innovative thinker, and an academically astute scholar who can draw on mātauranga Māori to create and maintain a Māori look and feel in any organisation while maintaining currency with evolving management practice locally and globally
* have an enhanced capacity in applying tikanga Māori in the functional areas of planning, organising, leading and control in organisations
* have a well developed level of te reo Māori and will be able to embed and encourage its use in organisations not only as a ceremonial function but also as a means of everyday communication
* be able to create resilient organisational cultures that have foundations in kaupapa Māori that in turn create a fair and just workplace
* be a critical thinker, capable of identifying objectives, roles, goals, and functions that create and maintain organisational effectiveness
* be a transformational leader able to analyse complex situations and lead change based on sound problem and decision analysis
* have a sound understanding of the legal environment as it applies to employment contracts, human rights and company law statutes and will be skilled at communicating the strategic intent of Māori organisations for market advantage
* be able to apply management practice to the efficient operation of hapū and iwi governance structures
* develop a rigorous understanding of hapū and iwi and serve as a repository of hapū and iwi knowledge

Entry Requirements
Applicants must provide evidence of support for their studies from a hapū or iwi, and must have completed an undergraduate degree or diploma, or equivalent work or management experience indicating an ability to study at post-graduate level.

Content
The Tāhuhu Whakahaere is a two year master's degree made up of three major categories of subject matter; Whakahaere Studies, Iwi and Hapū Studies and Te Reo Māori Studies. Whakahaere studies includes the use of kaupapa Māori planning frameworks, the application of kaupapa Māori to inform decision making, organisational design and relationship management, communication, branding and marketing, the development of organisational culture in tikanga Māori organsations and a major research project.

Level

Credits
