Strategic Purpose Statement
This qualification is intended for those who wish to actively contribute to Te
Whare Tapere (Māori literary performing arts) knowledge and practices
through performance, composition and production to reclaim, maintain and
expand iwi and hapū knowledge and te reo Māori revitalisation.
The purpose of the Poutuarongo Whare Tapere is to provide whānau, hapū
and iwi with researchers, composers and performers knowledgeable in te reo
Māori, tikanga Māori, and hapū and iwi kōrero tuku iho, with the ability to
comment on political and social current affairs on the marae and in other
environments.
Graduates will be able to apply and demonstrate advanced skills, knowledge
and behaviours in the investigation of hapū and iwi knowledge, performance,
composition and production. They will investigate the history and current
position of their marae, hapū, and iwi including whakapapa, value systems,
te reo Māori capability and oral literature at an intermediate level. Graduates will have an intermediate conversational level of te reo Māori. These skills,
knowledge and behaviours will enhance their ability to actively contribute to
whānau, hapū and iwi aspirations.
Graduate profile
The graduates of the Poutuarongo Whare Tapere will make a significant
contribution to their respective whānau, hapū and iwi and the retention of
significant hapū and iwi traditions. Graduates will:
1. Be skilled in the investigation and utilisation of te reo Māori and
kōrero tuku iho as a valued source of knowledge and inspiration in creative
and artistic Whare Tapere practice.
2. Elevate the expression of whanaungatanga, kotahitanga and
wairuatanga through individual, collective and leadership contributions to
kapa haka and the wider performing arts for enjoyment and entertainment.
3. Establish a personal self-reflective Whare Tapere framework to be
an active and innovative composer, performer and social commentator.
4. Continue to seek inspiration through the critical analysis and
evaluation of the work of exponents in composition, performance and
production to grow knowledge/whakatupu mātauranga.
5. Acknowledge, foster and promote the value of hapū and iwi
knowledge, and the importance of the reclamation, revitalisation and
expansion of that knowledge in the long-term resilience and prosperity of
hapū and iwi.
6. Actively contribute to the maintenance and enhancement of Te Reo
me ōna Tikanga in ongoing development of their Whare Tapere practice.

Poutuarongo Whare Tapere is comprised of the revitalisation of Whare
Tapere classical knowledge for the creation of new waiata, haka and poi.
Learning outcomes and assessments cover composition, performance and
management aspects of kapahaka and other rōpū for a range of whānau,
hapū and iwi environments. It includes te reo Māori studies and iwi and
hapū studies
