Strategic Purpose Statement |
Graduates of the Telford equine programme will have the skills and knowledge to continue with higher level learning and/or enter the equine industry in their chosen field - Sporthorse (riding or coaching), track riding, harness racing, or breeding. They will be able to work with a minimum of supervision through a range of core activities.

Graduate profile |
A graduate of the Telford Certificate in Equine (Level 4) will have equine, and some agriculture skills - with the flexibility to tackle a range of practical equine sector requirements. Practical skills will be supported by a sound knowledge foundation. Graduates who have achieved well within the qualification will have the clear indication that they are capable of higher levels of study in equine. Graduates will also have a network of industry colleagues as they enter the equine industry sector.
The successful course participant will, in summary: - be able to work in the equine sector with a minimum of supervision, through a range of core activities, and with an industry-acceptable level of productivity and competence - showing initiative and a sense of responsibility. - be competent and responsible with farm machinery and equipment - know the important and daily activities on involved in stable practice and be able to work through these in an organised manner - be able to organise various activities and identify possible factors and causes of problems, with possible solutions - including feeding regimes, equine health matters, use of fencing - know what needs to be communicated to the supervisor about aspects of the property - activities to be done, hazards and incidents, status of the animals. - Work reflectively |

Education pathways |
Students may progress from this qualification into the Telford Diploma in Horse Management (Level 5)* or one of the National Certificates in Equine (Level 3 or 4). Learners may pathway to further study to achieve the following qualifications:
* Telford Diploma in Horse Management (Level 5)* * National Certificate in Equine (Stable Procedures) (Level 3) (with strands in Harness Racing Stable Assistant, Sporthorse Stable Assistant, Thoroughbred Racing Stable Assistant and Thoroughbred Racing Track Rider) * National Certificate in Equine (Preliminary Coaching) (Level 3) * National Certificate in Equine (Coaching) (Level 4) * National Certificate in Equine (Level 4) (with strands in Sporthorse Stable Attendant, Harness Racing, Sporthorse Competitor, and Jockey) * National Certificate in Equine (Breeding) (Level 3) * National Certificate in Equine (Breeding) (Level 4) Alternatively, a learner may wish to choose: - New Zealand Harness Horse Training Scheme - National Certificate in Equine (Level 4) - Massey University - Diploma in AgriScience (Equine Studies) |

Entry Requirements |
Telford Certificate in Equine (Level 3) or equivalent. Those choosing the Sporthorse Industry Strand must have the ability to jump 70 cm (both show jumps and cross country fences) upon course entry. Those choosing the Track Riding Industry Strand must have the ability to jump 50 - 60 cm (cross country fences).
