Graduate profile |
Graduates of this programme will have good knowledge of the fundamentals of civil engineering in general, together with specialist knowledge of highway engineering at the higher levels. This will enable them to apply analytical skills and knowledge of technological principles to solve broadly defined problems in the field of civil engineering and roading.
Upon completion of the programme graduates will be able to: -Demonstrate knowledge and skills of mathematics and fundamental engineering sciences, and apply these to the solution of technical problems within a general civil engineering design and project environment -Apply advanced analysis and problem solving skills and knowledge of technological principles and physical processes to solve broadly defined engineering problems in a road construction, design and management environment -Identify and manage physical risks, and innovatively apply and modify practices in the field of highway engineering -Creatively plan, design, control, budget and prioritise highway construction and maintenance programmes to standards required by the engineering profession -Provide managerial input into highway engineering projects and activities -Implement and complete projects demonstrating the attributes of a capable and self directed learner -Undertake a wide range of support activities, including organisation, management, administration, liaison and public relations -Analyse and evaluate technical and economic options -Display substantial personal and professional communication skills, both verbal and written, and work cooperatively in a team environment -Exercise responsibility for the work of others, including cost-effective allocation of resources -Demonstrate an appreciation of the ethical principles and notions of responsibility and accountability in professional practices, and maintain individual quality standards -Continue studies towards higher professional or managerial qualifications in related fields such as pavement technology or transportation planning -Cultivate skills of independent and critical thinking towards application of their engineering skills -Appreciate the importance of retaining current competency through continued professional development. |

Entry Requirements |
Applicants should demonstrate an ability to succeed in the BEngTech(Highways) by the completion of any one of the following qualifications or courses of study:
(i) An A or B Bursary or a University Scholarship, including passes in mathematics* and English; or (ii) University Entrance (including mathematics* and English) by achievement in the examination or by accreditation through the New Zealand Qualifications Authority; or (iii) Sixth Form Certificate in four subjects (including English and mathematics) with total marks of 16 or fewer, including a grade of 4 or better in mathematics*; or (iv) A minimum of 64 credits in at least four subjects at NCEA Level 2, including a minimum of 15 credits each in English and Mathematics* (calculus or statistics); or (v) A minimum of 42 credits in at least three subjects at NCEA Level 3, including a minimum of 15 credits each in English and Mathematics* (calculus or statistics); or (vi) Equivalent NQF Unit Standards; or (vii) Completion of an external or overseas qualification that is considered to be the equivalent of any of the above qualifications, as approved by the Programme Manager. *Note: A bridging course (Introductory Mathematics) is available for applicants who do not meet the specified mathematics requirements. Applicants whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools or other teaching institutions is not English, are required to provide evidence of having met the following minimum English language requirements: (i) IELTS: an overall proficiency score of 6.5 (academic version), with no sub-test score lower than 6.0; or (ii) TOEFL 550 together with TWE of 5.0; or (iii) WITT Course Entrance Assessment: Level One pass 225/300; or (iv) Provide evidence of having passed such tests of English language competence, as the WITT Academic Board may from time to time approve. |
