Strategic Purpose Statement
Graduates of an LLB will demonstrate an understanding of the core areas of law and the role of law in society. They will have the ability to analyse legal problems. They will have some understanding of the legal systems and customary laws of Maori and Pacific peoples and the implication of these on a contemporary New Zealand society. Graduates will show ethical behaviour in using and advising on the law in their chosen career.

he LLB is designed to take four years of full-time study. It comprises ten compulsory subjects that include New Zealand legal system, case law, legal research and writing, the law of contract and torts, statute, public, criminal and property law; eleven law electives from a wide range of topics such as: Maori customary law, environmental law, evidence, indigenous rights, legal history, jurisprudence, the Bill of Rights, international law, law and economics, competition law, business associations, family law and employment law; and five or six non-law courses.

A mixture of internal assessment and examinations.

Qualification Type

Level

The NZQF has ten levels. Level one is least complex and is often entry-level, for example foundation certificates. Levels eight to ten are the most complex, and include post-graduate study.

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
