Strategic Purpose Statement
The Doctor of Midwifery is designed for established professionals in the health sector who wish to enhance their research-related professional practice and management. Graduates will be able to engage in high quality independent research and inquiry into their own practice and contribute original knowledge to improving health related practice, systems and policy. They will be able to link, in a coherent and rigorous manner, theory and research to questions of professional practice and management of the health system. Graduates will have advanced knowledge of their professional field and be able to evaluate and apply research and scholarly literature. They will adopt an investigative, open-minded, critical and reflective stance in addressing scholarly and professional problems from different perspectives, skillfully communicate research results to both academic and professional communities, and be able to engage in and critique the process of peer review. Graduates will demonstrate leadership in the areas of their professional endeavor as well as high personal ethical standards and behaviours in scholarly and professional contexts, and respect and maintain intellectual integrity.

Entry Requirements
To be admitted to the programme students need to hold a Masters or Postgraduate Diploma with a minimum GPA of B, have at least five years' professional experience and have established to the satisfaction of the Associate Dean that they are capable of proceeding with the doctorate.

Content
The Doctor of Midwifery is a 3 EFTS (360-point) qualification for which the full-time candidate shall be enrolled for a minimum of 36 months and a maximum of 48 months (or the part-time equivalents) excluding any approved period(s) of suspension. The programmes are structured into Part 1 (the coursework) and Part 2 (the thesis) with a minimum GPA of B being required in Part 1 for a student to proceed to the thesis. Students identify their proposed thesis topic at the time they apply to join the programme and are assigned a supervisor at the outset. Students' coursework assignments contribute to the development of their thesis topic and their preparation for completing their thesis research by building a four-part portfolio comprising a literature review, position paper framing their thesis topic, research design and thesis proposal. The thesis comprises up to 70, 000 words.

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
