Strategic Purpose Statement
Graduates of the PGCertGIS will have a high-level understanding of key spatial fields and their theoretical foundations (e.g. remote sensing, spatial analysis). They will also critically employ geospatial tools and technologies to real-world situations and use an in-depth knowledge of underlying spatial concepts to adapt to future changes in geospatial technology and processes. Graduates will be able to effectively communicate the results of geospatial analyses and techniques to industry, government, and be aware of the implications of Geographic Information Science (GIS) on the Treaty of Waitangi. Graduates will be well prepared to undertake GIS roles in relevant science, government, or private sector organisations.

Entry Requirements
A Bachelor's Degree with an average grade of B and two undergraduate GIS courses or extensive relevant industry experience. Entry will require the approval of the Programme Director and information about the admission requirements will be included in the relevant prospectuses.

Content
The compulsory courses in Geographic Information Science Applications and Impact (GISC 401) and Data Management, Programming and Applications (STAT 483) will provide students with an introduction to the wider context of GIS and its impact on society, and an understanding of fundamental programming concepts and implementation. The programmes are designed so students can then add courses from different geospatial concept areas, such as cartography (GISC 403), remote sensing (GISC 404), and spatial analysis (GISC 402).

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
