Strategic Purpose Statement |
The Graduate Certificate in Science (GCertSc) is designed for students wanting to transition to a new subject area including students seeking to undertake postgraduate study in a different subject area to their undergraduate qualifications. The GCertSc also supports students intending to enter interdisciplinary postgraduate qualifications, providing an option for students who are qualified in one discipline but require upskilling in another. The GCertSc may be taken without a subject specialisation, or may be endorsed with a specialisation corresponding to a major in the BSc.

Entry Requirements |
A bachelor's degree of Victoria University of Wellington or, at the discretion of the Wellington Faculty of Science, another university. This requirement may be waived or varied for a candidate who has had extensive practical, professional or scholarly experience that provides an equivalent level of preparation. All candidates must have been accepted by the relevant Head of School or nominee as capable of proceeding with the proposed course of study.

Content |
The course of study for the GCertSc is a coherent programme consisting of courses worth at least 60 points above 100 level from the BSc Schedule including at least 40 points at 300 level. A candidate may substitute courses from other Victoria University of Wellington programmes up to a value of 20 points. A candidate for the GCertSc may obtain a specialisation, provided that at least 45 points from their course of study is drawn from the 200- and 300-level requirements of the corresponding major subject specified in section 2 of the BSc regulations.

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
