Strategic Purpose Statement |
Graduates of this programme are able to demonstrate technical skill in a range of DJ styles and perform solo or as part of a DJ performance group to an industry standard, commensurate with paid performance work at small to medium sized venues as are commonly found in the New Zealand music industry. Graduates have DJ and communication skills needed to work in a variety of industry and musical contexts. They can demonstrate basic knowledge of music history and a knowledge of basic music theory as it relates to DJing. Graduates will be able to produce beats and tracks using their skills with computers and industry-specific software. Graduates are able to use their understanding of technology related to their work as a DJ to discuss developments in contemporary digital DJ technology. Graduates are able to demonstrate studio electronic and live music production skills including basic music keyboard skills and the ability to set up and operate small PA and lighting systems. They have basic business skills and a professional attitude to their DJ business (including book-keeping and costing). Graduates are able to demonstrate marketing, communication and self-promotion skills. They can identify health and safety issues in relation to the DJ Industry and apply safe practice. Graduates will employ a broad knowledge base incorporating some theoretical concepts, under broad guidance and evaluation. Graduates have the skills and knowledge to be able to participate actively in the DJ and music industries as full-time or part-time professional performers and electronic music producers and/or move on to further training in the areas of audio engineering, music and event management, or other careers in the creative sector. Graduates can confidently apply for enrolment in a more advanced DJ, audio or music programme.

NCEA Level 1 or any other level 1 qualification, or MAINZ Foundation programme. Over 16 years of age. Special entry may be granted where evidence exists that student can successfully complete programme.
